What Happens When I Don't Show up?: Exercising Agency and Finding Your Voice

Thursday, September 13, 2018
Staples Auditorium, 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm

The 2018 Senate Jennings Lecture will be given by Dr. Deniece Dortch, an internationally recognized speaker and author whose research and teaching grapples with systemic oppression across multiple axes. She uses critical phenomenological approaches to understand how African American undergraduate and graduate students experience and respond to race and racism at predominantly white institutions of higher education. What can individuals do to pay attention to or address the concerns that we see around us? Through her research and personal accounts, Dr. Dortch will address this question, explore motivations for racial agency, and examine the ways it can be tackled in public and in private, at Hendrix College and beyond.
