Wind Ensemble Fall Concert(1)

Monday, November 14, 2016
Staples Auditorium, 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm

The Wind Ensemble will present its fall concert titled "War and Peace" on Monday, November 14 at 7:30 p.m. in Staples Auditorium. The program features music exploring either war or peace and juxtaposes them so we might examine how these elements coexist - both in music and the world as a whole. After the Overture in B-flat by Caesar Giovannini to begin the program, the Wind Ensemble will perform Daniel Bukvich's Symphony No. 1: In Memoriam - Dresden 1945, a musical depiction of the Allied bombing attack on Dresden near the end of World War II. The Symphony will be followed by Franz Biebl's Ave Maria, for which the Wind Ensemble will be joined by vocalists and Hendrix Choir members Noah Adams and Joshua Beggs. The second half of the program includes J.S. Bach's Fugue in G Minor, written when he was a young man. Next is Elliot Del Borgo's masterpiece Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night, which is based on the Dylan Thomas poem of the same title and explores the idea of not going peacefully into death. The program closes with William Schuman's Chester, which is based on William Billings' famous hymn and marching song of the American Revolution. The Wind Ensemble will be joined by actors from Hendrix's Theatre Arts and Dance Department to speak the texts on which several of the pieces are based. Please join the Wind Ensemble and its guest artists for what promises to be an intense and thought-provoking musical experience.
