English Department

Enrichment

Most English study away opportunities take our students to England, taking advantage of our Semester-in-London and Oxford programs. We've also had students study in Africa, Spain, Switerland, and other places.

Every year some of our students present papers at the National Conference for Undergraduate Research. We’ve also had students present papers at such conferences as Sigma Tau Delta's regional and national conferences, and the Associated College of the South's Gender Studies Conference and British Studies Symposium. Students have also attended professional conferences like the Modern Language Association annual event. Recently we've begun sending a cohort of students each summer to the Nebraska Writers' Workshop.

Several large universities with substantial archival holdings are within a day’s drive from Hendrix, including the University of Arkansas, the University of Mississippi, and the University of Texas-Austin. Every fall break one faculty members leads a group of students conducting independent archival research at the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center (UT-Austin). Students also have the oppotuntiy to apply for individual travel grants to pursue their research.

Many of our students work on the campus paper (The Profile) and the literary and art magazine (The Aonian). Several local publications also offer internship and other work opportunities, such as The Oxford American, The Log-Cabin Democrat, and The Arkansas Times.
