July 23, 2026—While millions of viewers tuned in to watch the energy,
entertainment, and carefully produced chaos of Streamer University, Hendrix
College students were experiencing something entirely different behind the
scenes: a real-world classroom.
Aligning with Hendrix College's new Via Hendrix
initiative, students worked alongside professionals in technology, media
production, and digital communications as the campus transformed into the
production site for one of the world's most-watched creator events. The
experience provided students with an up-close look at emerging careers while
allowing them to contribute to a production with a truly global audience.
Student workers assisted with a variety of technical and
operational responsibilities, including production support, technology setup,
equipment coordination, connectivity, and event logistics. Along the way, they
learned directly from producers, camera operators, technical crews, network
specialists, and digital content professionals whose work brought the event to
life.
For Will Humiston ’27, a Hendrix senior and politics
major, that meant helping build the temporary Wi-Fi and surveillance network
that supported the event—despite having no previous experience in networking.
“I had zero prior knowledge in that field,” Humiston
said. “After a lot of listening and trying things out, I got my head wrapped
around it. The most rewarding part was watching the streamers come to campus
and immediately use the network I helped set up. Going into the experience I
had no clue how any of it worked, and coming out of it I got to say I played a
crucial part in making it happen.”
Experiences like Humiston's embody the purpose of Via
Hendrix, which connects students with meaningful professional experiences that
complement their liberal arts education. Beyond technical skills, students
developed adaptability, communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities
while working under the pressure of a large-scale live production.
“I learned how to make myself useful even when I didn't
really understand what was happening around me,” Humiston said. “Hard work and
a desire to learn and help can take me, and whatever project I'm part of, a
very long way.”
“Via Hendrix is
designed to connect classroom learning with meaningful professional experience,”
said Hendrix College President Karen Petersen. “Streamer University gave our
students the opportunity to observe and participate in the kind of large-scale
production that few college students ever have the chance to experience. They
didn't simply watch innovation happen—they helped make it possible.”
Beginning with the incoming class this fall, every
Hendrix student will complete a semester-long professional co-op through Via
Hendrix, making Hendrix the only college or university in Arkansas—and the only
liberal arts college in the region—to guarantee every student this level of
immersive career preparation. Experiences like Streamer University demonstrate
the kinds of partnerships and opportunities that prepare students for careers
in rapidly evolving industries.
Amelia Don ’28, an accounting major who hopes to pursue a
career in sports management and administration, worked in event logistics
before receiving an unexpected opportunity to help with production of Streamer
University’s NBA-style livestreamed basketball game.
“I got the opportunity to be a boom mic operator,” Don
said. “I was on the sideline, and that was super fun—a really cool opportunity.”
For Don, the experience reinforced the value of
collaboration in fast-paced environments.
“Something that I'll forever take away from this is in
the chaos of it all, the unity that all of our staff had was incredible,” she
said. “Whether it came to our staff, the SU staff, the Conway PD staff, we all
worked together to get this done. I think being able to take with me the
teamwork of it all was really cool.”
Although viewers saw dorm rooms turned upside down,
creator challenges, and other moments designed for entertainment, much of what
appeared on screen was intentionally staged as part of the production. Outside
of the camera's view, Hendrix staff, students, and event partners worked
diligently to protect the campus throughout the event.
Following the conclusion of Streamer University, campus
crews and professional contractors completed cleanup, repairs, and restoration
work, returning the College to the welcoming environment students, employees,
alumni, and visitors know and expect.
“The story we're most
proud to tell isn't about what happened on camera,” said Vice Provost of
Student Formation Todd Tinsley. “It's about the educational opportunities our
students gained behind the scenes. They worked alongside experts, experienced
cutting-edge technology firsthand, and saw how the skills they're developing at
Hendrix translate directly into exciting careers.”
For Hendrix, Streamer University was more than a
high-profile event. It was an example of the College's commitment to preparing
students for what's next—connecting academic learning with practical
experience, professional mentorship, and opportunities that extend far beyond
the classroom.
While viewers saw the carefully produced entertainment,
the lasting impact at Hendrix happened behind the cameras. Students gained
firsthand experience with careers in media production, network engineering,
live event operations, and digital content creation while contributing to a
project with worldwide reach. As Via Hendrix launches this fall, experiences
like these will become an even more intentional part of every student's Hendrix
education, ensuring graduates leave campus with both the knowledge and the
professional confidence to thrive in an increasingly connected world.
Looking back, Humiston said the experience gave him a new
appreciation for an industry he knew little about before arriving on set.
“The amount of work and professionalism that went into
this event is hard to explain,” he said. “It was chaos, but controlled chaos, and
learning how to navigate that and having the opportunity to do so alongside
true professionals is a gift that will continue to help me for my entire
professional career.”
Don believes the event also introduced a global audience
to the Hendrix community she knows.
“It makes me really emotional to think that everyone
around the world is going to get that same experience through the streams at
Hendrix,” she said. “It's a really incredible school, and I wouldn't want to be
anywhere else.”
