Friday, November 10, 2017
Murphy House , 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Dr. Stella Čapek, Distinguished Professor of Sociology, and Dr. Gretchen Renshaw James, Assistant Professor of Music, will present a screening of the film Brassed Off on Friday, November 10 at 7:00 p.m. in the Murphy House. Set in the 1980s, Brassed Off tells the story of a coal mine in northern England that is facing closure as part of the government’s efforts to transition to nuclear power. The movie explores the mine closure's devastating impacts on the town itself and its resident brass band. After the film, Dr. Čapek and Dr. Renshaw will lead a discussion on the societal impacts of closing mines and the power of music to hold people together in difficult times. This event is open to the public, and popcorn will be provided!
