Not long ago, these icons promoted racial stereotyping. We will use them to talk about issues such as the responsibility of mass media and censorship. Please note: the examples to be explored do involve old, but still likely offensive, stereotyping.

Amateur Radio Field Day
Learn what ham radio is all about. Participate with 30,000 ham radio operators in the largest simulated emergency in the U.S. The field day will begin at noon on Saturday and end at noon on Sunday.

Passport to America Day
Welcome to the AGS Island Passport to America Field Day. The students will be visiting different states’ stations having fun that pertains to a fun fact about that state.

Documentary: Rize
Watch a documentary about hip-hop clowns and the dance phenomenon called Krumping that is sweeping through South Central, Los Angeles.

Freeball
This is an excellent lead-up game for playing soccer by engaging soccer and basketball. There are only two ways to score. Either kick the ball through the goal or shoot it through a basket.

Jay-Z and The Beatles have very different ideas about what you should be able to do with their music.  Do copyright law and the traditional ideal of authorship still make sense?  We will review legal background, case studies, and music samples surrounding this issue.

Documentary focusing on the experiences of a trio of children who attend Pastor Becky Fischer's "Kids on Fire Summer Camp" where participants are taught to become dedicated Christian soldiers in God's Army and techniques on how to take back America for Christ.

AGS Idol Rehearsal
The four remaining contestants as well as any other participants in the finale must meet in Staples for a rehearsal.

Joi Chen: “Hip-hop Workshop”
All are welcome to come and learn some new dance moves and combinations at this weekly workshop. Shake it fast, but watch yourself!

Bryan Cwik: “What is the Mind Anyway?”
Basic concepts and issues in the philosophical foundations of the new “sciences of the mind,” such as innateness, modularity, the computing architecture of the mind, artificial intelligence, and evolutionary psychology.

Danny Antakli: “A Flat Earth: Then and Now”
A history of a flat earth, why some people don’t believe it and why some still do.

Angela Moore: “Inside North Korea”
A discussion of the totalitarian reign of Kim-Jong Ill and how isolated it has become to the rest of the world.

Hardin vs. Raney Chess Match
Who will win? Find out which dorm will prevail in an epic chess match up.

Helen Maringer: “Art Performance”
Students will donate one article of their clothing to this one-time art performance. If you donate, stick around to be included in the performance as well.

Ham Radio Class
Learn more about ham radios and earn your ham radio operator’s license.  There is no Morse Code requirement.  The license exam will be given on Friday, July 20.  More information is at http://www.w5auu.org/.

Open Mic Night
What will you do with your time on stage? Share some poetry, a song, comedy, or random thoughts. No profanity or inappropriate subject matter will be tolerated.

Ask the Governor
AETN (Arkansas Public Television) will be taping an episode of “Arkansans Ask: Governor Beebe” at 4:00 in Staples.  You are invited and encouraged to attend and ask Governor Beebe questions.  Be sure to come prepared with questions about burning topics and issues regarding our state.

Student vs. Faculty/Staff Softball Game
Will history be made this summer? If you are curious about the most important game on campus, show up at the softball field.

Jim Rush: “Stress Reduction Experience”
This is an introduction to a stress reduction experience using mindfulness meditation techniques.

Firefly Series
Join faculty and staff in watching a sci-fi television series by Joss Whedon. The show takes place in space but is modeled after old Westerns.

Miyazaki Film Series
Part three of the film series is Spirited Away. After being stranded in a mysterious world, a young girl works in a bathhouse that caters to Japanese gods and spirits while trying to break the curse that binds her there.

AGS Idol Finale
Who will be the next AGS Idol? You will decide the winner this week. Don’t miss the grand finale in Staples.

The extreme chicas from Couch and Martin meet to determine the AGS extreme chica.

Dodgeball

Lyle Rupert: “Pipe Organ Extravaganza”
The versatility of the pipe organ will be demonstrated with music by Bach, Purcell, Clarke, Dupre, and Schroeder.

Study Abroad Panel Discussion
Interested in studying abroad in college? Faculty and staff members will share experiences and answer questions. Hear about Ghana, Finland, and more!

Ron Novy: “We, the Cyborgs”
Frankenstein, Cylons, Replicants, Deep Blue, heart valves, and Adderoll- evidence of cyborgs is all around us and inside of us. By following this trail of the relation of our technology to our biology, we’ll discover the secrets of the cyborg.

Art Exhibition

Wiffle Ball and Bat
The wiffle ball was designed to take the place of baseball, stickball and softball for everyone. It is an excellent indoor ball game. Bring your running shoes, and catch a lot of fun!

Introduction to Yoga and Pilates
Join Jessica Sardashti for a basic workshop on yoga and Pilates. It is open to everyone, but you must bring a large towel.

Planet Earth Series
Observe and learn the importance of our natural planet. From ice to the jungle, air to the deep sea, come and catch a glimpse of our real world.

Jason Wiles: “Evolution, and Race: The Difference Between Us”
What does the science of evolutionary biology tell us about the nature of race? Among other things, this session will shed light on important aspects of this week’s required film, Rabbit Proof Fence.

Jacob Held: “South Park and Philosophy”
South Park is arguably the most provocative and thought provoking series on television with the benefit of being able to address each issue from a realm of fantasy. This allows the audience the distance necessary for reflection while remaining enough in the real world.

Brett Clarke
If you’re interested in origami, come and see what it’s all about! He will show you how to read diagrams and introduce some popular folds for intermediate and medium level origami.

Rabbit Proof Fence
The movie recounts the true story of three Australian aborigine girls who were forcibly separated from their mothers as part of Australia’s aboriginal protection policy in the 1930s. The three girls set out on a 1,500 mile trek to find their way home via the “rabbit-proof fence” that crosses Western Australia.

Ham Radio Licensing Exam
Come pass this exam to earn your government issued amateur radio license. There is a licensing fee of $14 so be sure to bring your money.

Sam Tamo: “Assyrian Genocide of 1933”
An introduction to who Assyrians are, an explanation of why and how the genocide occurred, and a conclusion focused on getting rid of genocide.

Gospel Choir Performance
For those of you who didn't get the chance to hear these dynamic students at the churches we attended this summer, come out and hear your peers in the AGS Praise Chorale. This concert promises a lot of excitement, tender moments, and, most importantly, a lot of worship!

Final Mixer
Bring your yearbooks, your cameras, and your dancing shoes. The songs you suggested for “create your own playlist” will be used for an AGS countdown of your favorite songs.

Closing Convocation
This is the final assembly at AGS 2007. It is for students, faculty, and staff only. Afterward, meet your parents and check out of your dorms. Goodbye, and thanks for a great summer!
