help63The Department of Education prepares early childhood, middle school and secondary education teachers through programs approved by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and the Arkansas Department of Education.

Students can major in elementary education and receive certification as an early childhood (pre-school - 4th grade) teacher, or receive certification at the secondary level by combining a major in an academic field with a series of courses in education. All courses contain a field component to provide a variety of hands-on experiences prior to the full semester of student teaching. At Hendrix, the development of a knowledgeable, caring, and effective teacher is enhanced by the personal attention each student receives as well as the closeness that occurs among the students who participate in the program.

Students attend state meetings of the Arkansas Education Association and other professional associations such as the National Science Teachers Association and International Reading Association. Students participate in the Program for Effective Teaching, multicultural workshops, special education workshops, computer technology workshops, discipline conferences, and the classroom management program. The teacher-certification programs provide a strong liberal arts education and give students in-depth experience and full certification.
