Richard Gobble: “Deconstructing the Death Penalty”
A critical analysis of capital punishment.

Lana Allen: “Cambodian Mad-Scientists: On the Lost Era of Khmer Rock-And-Roll”
The Vietnam War brought American rock and roll to Cambodia. Unfortunately, it also allowed for the rise of Pol Pot and the murder of one third of the Cambodian population. This genocide singled-out artists in particular for execution. Come learn about this lost era and listen to some tracks from Cambodian rock legends – including a Khmer version of “Proud Mary,” and more.

Chad Terrell: “Were Bugs Bunny, Popeye, and Superman Racist?”
Not long ago, these icons promoted racial stereotyping.  We will use them to talk about issues such as the responsibility of mass media and censorship.  Please note: the examples to be explored do involve old, but still likely offensive, stereotyping.

Josh Ulrey: “Math Movie Monday: Flatland”
The first installment of Math movie Monday features Flatland: The Movie, an adaptation of Edwin Abbott’s book of the same name. Flatland: The Movie is set in a two-dimensional universe and focuses on Hex, a young girl intent on discovering the third dimension.

Human Scavenger Hunt
Meet by the Fountain and get to know the campus and faculty by deciphering riddles and performing various tasks!

Gentle Yoga
A class focused on stretching and breathing for people who need to be careful of joints or muscles or who just want a gentle morning workout; most of the practice will be done sitting or lying down -- a great way to start your day!  Bring a yoga mat or towel to stand on; I have a few extra mats, but not enough for everyone.

AGS Gospel Choir Sign-Up
Sign up in the Sun Porch in the SLTC at lunch

Art Swap
Come by Susanna’s desk and pick up an index card to participate in Art Swap.  Each participant will design and decorate one side of their card with any medium they may choose (be creative!) and return the card to her by this Friday.  She will distribute the cards randomly to the mailboxes of everyone who participates, so that everyone who turns in a card will receive a piece of artwork to keep by one of their classmates.

Ultimate Frisbee
It’s called “Ultimate” for a reason.  The Spartans played Ultimate Frisbee.  Fact.  Come out to the turf fields for the most hardcore experience you’ve ever had with a frisbee.

Reading Interest
This group will meet under the colorful chandelier in the Burrow once a week to discuss books.  There will be opportunities to read books as a group and then discuss them, as well as opportunities to give book talks about books you have read that you think your fellow AGS’ers would enjoy.

Wesley Beal: “Space as Narrative, or, Reading Walt Disney World”
How does spatial organization tell a story? We’ll explore spatial narrative by “reading” Disney theme park maps for attractions like the Magic Kingdom and EPCOT.

Peggy Scranton: “What’s In a Presidential Library”
Overview of Presidential Library system, the Clinton Library, and what’s inside.

Nicholas Seward: “Open Source World”
Look at what open source is and how it affects you. Discuss the pros and cons of software patents. Discover the top open source projects that you haven’t heard about but should have. Most importantly, win a “magic” flash drive.

Gerry Gibson: “The Firebird”
A video presentation of Stravinsky’s ballet “The Firebird” performed live by The Royal Ballet at Covent Garden.

Rapid Fire Scrabble
A combination of Scrabble, Boggle and Bananagrams with the energy pumped way up. Bring your friends!

Dynamic Yoga

Dodgeball Tournament
Dodge, duck, dip, dive, and dodge!  Get your troops together into teams and register during lunch for weekly epic showdowns.  As dodgeball great Patches O'Houlihan would say, “If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball!”

Mark Elrod: “Micro Banking: Small Loans That Make a Big Difference”
A brief description of the history and philosophy of micro banking in international development.

Rick Dimond: “Drum Set Jamboree!”
Do you play drums? Or, have you always wanted to? Come play a short drum solo, or just try your first beat! Any level of player or listener welcome. Drum set provided. Bring your sticks and friends!

Rapheal Lewis: “Politics and Religion a Holy Alliance”
Comments and observations: Despite all arguments about separation of church and state, politics and religion appear interwoven.

AGS Idol Auditions
In the next four weeks, we will find and declare our very own AGS Idol 2011.

Jim Rush: “Mindfulness Experience”
Introduction to and practice of mindfulness meditation and stress management.

Revis Edmonds: “Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed”

Racquet Sports
Come to the WAC gym for some fun out of the sun while battling for supremacy on the hardcourts.  Ping Pong, Badminton and Pickleball courts will be set up for singles and doubles.

I’m sure you’ve played Capture The Flag before, but have you played on Hendrix Campus? It’s AWE-SOME. Let’s meet at the fountain and fight to the end over those flags.

GIANT GAMES
Head over to the Brick Pit and challenge either your brain or your athleticism.  Groups of five will compete for the king position in GIANT four-square while other students will ponder over a GIANT game of Sudoku.  Be there or be square.

Jason Wiles: “What Do the Scriptures Actually Say About Creation?”
Bring your holy scriptures with you! Bibles, Torahs, Korans (we'll probably focus on scriptures of the Abrahamic religions, but all are welcome!) and any other sacred texts you may wish to hear or read from. Let's examine a bit of the diversity among creation accounts from the scriptures and think about what they say. We can also talk about what science has to say about the history of the universe, the Earth, and life. Any questions you may have about evolution will be entertained in this question/answer/open discussion session.

Tara Flanagan: “Bioethics: A History of Human Experimentation”
This discussion looks at the history of the use of human beings as subjects in medical experiments, with particular attention paid to human research conducted in the U.S.

Amazing Grace Café Volunteer Trip
Sign up on Wednesday to go help a local soup kitchen serve dinner to homeless and impoverished families of Conway. Since you will miss dinner here, you will be able to eat the food that is served at the Café.

AGS Gospel Choir Interest Meeting
If you are a singer, a musician, or just someone who loves music, come out and get some information about the AGS Gospel Choir.

Koyaanisqatsi
Directed by Godfrey Reggio. This movie is described by Leonard Maltin as a “spellbinding, senses‑staggering, non‑narrative film” so rich in beauty and detail that with each viewing it becomes a new and different film. It juxtaposes natural environments and those affected by humans in a way that suggests “life out of balance” (a translation of its Hopi title), yet without preaching or ignoring the beauty of the man‑made world. The score by Philip Glass is riveting and compelling. The film raises questions about the human relationship to nature, the destructive potential of technology, and the chaos and loneliness of the modern urban world. It also can provoke discussions of aesthetic questions through its innovative approach to the medium of film and its creation of a new reality through extensive visual comparisons of nature and technology using slow motion and time‑lapse photography intertwined with a "dialogue" of music.

Outdoor Futbol
The WORLD'S favorite pastime.  We will play a full game of 11 vs. 11, or multiple games if we have enough people.

Knitting Circle
Announcing the AGS Knitting and Crochet club! Feel free to stop by and bring any projects that you are currently working on.  If you want to learn how to knit, please send an email to Peggy Scranton (ScrantongPAGS@hendrix.edu) and she will try to get some extra knitting needles.

Phillip Spivey: “What Is Judaism? Q and A”
Judaism is one of the oldest and most influential Western religious traditions. Who are the Jewish people? What does it mean to be Jewish? What are the origins of Judaism? Bring your questions, and get ready to schmooze.

Lyle Rupert: “Pipe Organ Extravaganza!”
Come hear a little Bach, Handel, and Pachelbel on the Chapel organ.  This program will be short enough to stay interesting but long enough to show the organ’s versatility.

Kondwani Phwandaphwanda: “Music for Social Justice”
A discussion about the use of music to address social issues in order to bring about change.

Ta-Neisha Verley: “Dr. Seuss and Beyond”
Dr. Seuss had a creative interpretation of political and philosophical concepts and historical events. Come analyze America’s favorite children’s book author!

Beatrice Vena: “Stage Make Up Extravaganza!”
We will focus on four different types of make up; classic, or “straight,” old age, gruesome, and non-human! Demonstrations and hands on, this class has a limited number of seats. If interested, please email venabc@hendrix.edu by Tuesday, June 14. Express interest and be able to commit to all four workshops.

Slip ‘N Slide
This is not the tiny slide in your parents’ backyard- this is a whole new world of sliding.

Throwback Mixer
Let’s go back in time and dance to timeless favorites.  The best songs never die!  Dress for your favorite decade, from the sixties to the nineties!

Sand Volleyball/Outdoor Games
Fun in the sun, it is summertime, after all.  Bring your sunscreen, shorts, and sunglasses for games of sand volleyball, horseshoes, bean bag toss, and your other favorite outdoor games.

Foreign Film Series
Acclaimed Swedish auteur Ingmar Bergman's Wild Strawberries (Sweden 1957) tells the story of elderly professor Isak Borg as he journeys to receive an honorary degree. Featuring one of cinema's most memorable dream sequences, the film serves as a guide into Borg's soul-searching as he confronts the angels and demons that have shaped his experiences throughout his life.

Spades Tournament 2011!!!
Find a partner or come as a free agent to compete in the most thrilling card game around! The game will be officiated by the 2007 Spades Tournament Grand Champions.  Be there or be square.

The Unwinking Gaze
An astonishing film showing the trials and tribulations of the XIV Dalai Lama as he faces up to the titanic challenge of engaging with China.

As You Like It
One of Shakespeare’s most famous comedies, “As You Like It” is ‘full of music, romance, silliness, excitement and reconciliation; the play is full to bursting with the simple joy of simply living’, according to Andrew Hamm, Director for the Arkansas Shakespeare Theatre’s production.  It will be presented in an outdoor arena.  There are limited spaces available, so be sure to sign up for it and hope you are one of the lucky ones to attend!

We will focus on four different types of make up; classic, or “straight,” old age, gruesome, and non-human! Demonstrations and hands on, this class has a limited number of seats. Please attend only if you signed up and were notified you have a spot in the class.

The Happening
Come support your fellow arts students in their venture into a wide range of traditional and experimental art in this unusual arts happening taking place around and in the ballroom area of the student center. You don’t want to miss this!

Ultimate Frisbee Tournament
More hardcore action slinging around the flying disc, but this time it counts!  Register in the Sunporch and come out to the turf field to see who can assemble the best Ultimate Frisbee team in AGS.  The faculty team may even make a “celebrity” appearance in this tourney.

Quiz Bowl
Come join Quiz Bowl superstar Mark Elrod of Area II fame for this trivia-filled event.  Two teams from each brother-sister dorm pairing (Raney paired with Couch and Veasey paired with Hardin) will compete in a double elimination tournament to determine the AGS Quiz Bowl Champions. Each team must have at least one member from the opposite sex.  Talk to your RAs about organizing teams. Spectator seats are available, but seats are limited and absolute quiet is required during play.

Mr. & Miss AGS 2011
It’s time for your RAs to strut their stuff! Dress up your RAs in cute or crazy outfits and prepare them to compete in the Mr. & Miss AGS 2011 pageant! Get started at 6:00 in your dorm lobby and walk over to Worsham by 7:15.

Relay Races
Come out to the turf fields for some wild and crazy versions of relay races.  Activities will include sponge relays, fill the bottle relays, suitcase relays, and many more!

Foreign Film Series
Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami's ruminative offering, Taste of Cherry (Iran 1997), follows the middle-aged Mr. Badii as he drives around the dusty wastelands of Tehran. Badii is searching for someone to give him a reason to live, but who can give him the answer he seeks? God? The government? A taxidermist?

Red Cross Blood Drive
The American Red Cross will be hosting a blood drive which will last from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm.  Students 17 years of age or older who weigh at least 110 pounds and are in good health are encouraged to donate blood.  Be sure to bring your driver’s license or state-issued ID. If you are under 17, there is a parental consent form in your dorm lobby.

AGS Idol: Round 2
Who will be the next AGS Idol?  Come watch, listen, and vote.  See which contestants will make it to the final round!

Music Jam 2011
Bring your iPod or MP3 player and lots of friends for an informal dance party in the Brick Pit.  We’ll bring the speakers, you bring the fun.

Week 3 Blurbs

Ask the Governor
AETN (Arkansas Public Television) will be taping the quarterly episode of “Arkansans Ask: Governor Beebe” at 3:30 pm right here at AGS!  You are encouraged to ask Governor Beebe questions.  So, be sure to come prepared with questions about burning topics and issues regarding our state.  Area I will dismiss at 3:15 pm.  Please come directly to Staples and sit in your assigned areas.

  College Fair
College representatives from across the region will be in Worsham from 5:00 to 7:00pm. Students are encouraged to come meet with them, ask questions, and get a headstart on the search for the right college.

Reading Interest Group
This group will meet under the colorful chandelier in the Burrow once a week to discuss books.  There will be opportunities to read books as a group and then discuss them, as well as opportunities to give book talks about books you have read that you think your fellow AGS’ers would enjoy.

Richard Gobble: “Reasonable Doubt: The Case of the West Memphis Three”
Ever since their 1993 conviction for a particularly brutal murder, the so-called West Memphis Three have staunchly maintained their innocence.  This case has gained nationwide notoriety and has become the cause de jour for many famous personalities, while native Arkansans are left to closely examine their notions of justice.

Josh Ulrey: “Math Movie Monday: Hunting the Hidden Dimension”
The third installment of Math Movie Monday features Hunting the Hidden Dimension, a BBC documentary focusing on fractal geometry and its applications in the real world and nature.

Rob Lord: “Libya and the Responsibility to Protect”
The current situation in Libya is remarkably exceptional because for the first time the United Nationals specifically referenced the “responsibility to protect (R2P),” what many have referred to as a newly emerging norm in international law. What is R2P and what does it mean for international law? Rob Lord, a former AGS student and a member of Hendrix’s award-winning Model UN delegation, as well as an intern at the Clinton School, will discuss the evolving nature of warfare and national sovereignty, placing a special focus on the Arab Spring uprisings.

Student Talent Show
As we all discovered during the mixer our first night together, you are a class full of students with interesting talents.  Your fellow students will put on a variety show that is sure to entertain.

Gentle Yoga
A class focused on stretching and breathing for people who need to be careful of joints or muscles or who just want a gentle morning workout; most of the practice will be done sitting or lying down -- a great way to start your day!  Bring a yoga mat or towel to stand on; we have a few extra mats, but not enough for everyone.

Water Balloon Battleship
Two of the greatest things in the world come together: water balloons and warfare.  This will be the day of reckoning.  Get ready.  It’s ON.

Ta-Neisha Verley and Kathy Babcock: “Immigration: Myths and Realities”
This session will be a discussion on immigration from a personal and legal standpoint. We will discuss media and political interpretations of immigration policies and have a Q&A for those who are interested.

Cache Carter: “Social Justice: White Privilege”
Attorney General Eric Holder was famously quoted as saying, “Though this nation has proudly thought of itself as an ethnic melting pot, in things racial we have always been and I believe continue to be, in too many ways, essentially a nation of cowards.” This seminar will consist of discussion and debate of what Holder may have meant and will look into the social phenomenon called “White Privilege.”

Fred Boosey and Beatrice Vena: “Living History – Keeping the Past to Show the Future”
The group will discuss and watch dramatic presentations of living history and will learn how to develop presentations for your school and community.

Bill Higgins and Rachel Schrag: “Singing Master Class”

Shelley Ledbetter: “Space Tourists”
A video documentary on space tourism, highlighting Virgin Galactic.

Catherine Swift: “Animals in Academic and Therapy Fields”
Dr. Catherine Swift will present information on the use of animals in academic and therapy fields.  Having published her dissertation research on using dogs in reading programs, she now includes a discussion of the use of equine programs on the college campus.  Her teaching partner is Porsche, a 9 year old thoroughbred/clydesdale mare.

Drama Showcase
Drama students will perform polished monologues for the audience.

Poetry Reading
Poetry is so often read silently, but it can be experienced in a new and surprising way when read aloud by another. Bring your favorite poetry with you and come to this session to both read and be read to by your AGS cohort. Facilitator Tara Flanagan will be bringing work from the poets read at the variety show, as well as work from poets such as Langston Hughes and Walt Whitman, poets whose work comes alive when read aloud. Of note, this is not a poetry slam--this is a collaborative, not a competitive, endeavor.

Mindfulness Experience Group
Introduction to and practice of mindfulness meditation and stress management.

Iron-E
Come out to enjoy the unique musical stylings of this rockin’ group of AGS alum. Their witty lyrics and pulsing beats will be sure to keep you entertained.

Dynamic Yoga
A class for all levels of yoga students, including beginners, who want to explore a variety of yoga postures and breathing techniques; instructions are given to modify postures for more advanced levels of practice -- a great way to get moving in the morning!  Bring a yoga mat or towel to stand on; we have a few extra mats, but not enough for everyone.

Flag Football
America’s favorite sport, we'll gather on the turf field and go head to head on the gridiron.

Wesley Beal: “What’s the Matter with Gotham City? Ideologies of Crime and Punishment in Batman
How does the Batman mythology reflect American values of criminality and incarceration? In this talk, we will examine the Chrstopher Nolan franchise to explore the ideologies behind what many refer to as America’s “carceral state.”

Kevin Sanders: “Be a Genius in 10,000 Simple Steps”
Today’s superstars aren’t born – they’re grown! We’ll take a look at what Bill Gates, The Beatles, Tiger Woods, and Mozart all have in common.

The Great Area II Debate: “Is Just War Just”
Faculty debate the issue of the “just war.”

“Othello”
A Shakespeare tragedy filled with love, deceit, jealousy, trickery, and secret motives, Othello will keep you spellbound to the end.  Watch carefully as the deceitful villain, Iago, manipulates everyone as his plans unfold.  In the end, will we truly understand what drove him to act this way?

Softball
Come over to the WAC fields for a friendly game of softball and tune up your ball skills for the big Student/Faculty softball game on the 4th!

Amazing Grace Café Volunteer Trip
Sign up on Wednesday to go help a local soup kitchen serve dinner to homeless and impoverished families of Conway. Since you will miss dinner here, you will be able to eat the food that is served at the Café.

Tara Flanagan: “Bioethics: Literature, Technology, and Care”
This session addresses the seductive aspect of medical technology when it comes to research and the implications of technological care. Using literature to anchor our discussion, we will look to the work of Samuel Beckett, particularly his avant-garde play "Rockabye" to discuss technology and care for another.

Spencer Sutterfield: “Tracing the Roots of Political Theatre: From Brecht and Boal to Reverend Billy”
What do a German Marxist director, a Brazillian political prisoner, and an American street performer have in common? Trace the roots of political theatre from Bertolt Brecht to Reverend Billy.

Rapheal Lewis: “Bob Marley: The Man and His Music”
A discussion on how this performer uses his music to address social, economic, and political problems.

“The Invention of Lying”

Jessica Pitchford and Amber James: “Good Liars: Writers and Ethics”
Participants will discuss and practice ethical decision-making in writing, both fiction and non. Please bring pen and paper.

Josh Ulrey: “Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorems and the Limitations of Mathematics”
Mathematics is often considered an infallible and completely objective discipline, but the Incompleteness Theorems of Kurt Gödel state otherwise. This session will provide brief sketches of the proofs of Gödel’s theorems, as well as the discussion of the implications of his work.

3-on-3 or 5-on-5 Basketball
Get your ankle tape, high tops, and headbands ready for a ballin’ opportunity at the WAC gym. Get a team of together, sign-up in the Sunporch, and let’s see who the best ballers in AGS are. We will either play 5-on-5 full court, or 3-on-3 half court, depending on the number of participants.

AGS Idol Finale
It’s down to the final four! Come and hear your fellow students sing their way to stardom and vote on your favorite.

Hoop Dreams
Live from Hendrix College, it's Conway indie rock sensation Hoop Dreams! Fronted by AGS's very own Area V A/V Specialist (and AGS Idol judge) Lira Mondal, the band combines Sonic Youth-style art rock with bouncy pop hooks akin to Tennis and Galaxie 500. Don't miss out on some sweet live music!

Heifer Village Trip
Visit the Heifer Village at its international headquarters in Little Rock.  You will learn about its endeavors to end world hunger and poverty at its hands-on, global education facility.  Check the rosters in your residence hall.  If your name is on the roster, you are required to attend.

5-on-5 Indoor Soccer Tournament
Ole! Ole! Ole! Ole!  Get your team together and sign-up in the Sun Porch for an indoor version of the World’s favorite sport.

Friendship Bracelets
I don't care if you’re seven or seventeen, friendship bracelets are the best accessory.  Come make a bracelet to give to a friend you've made at AGS or come together to make matching bracelets!

“Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”
This fun musical by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber is sure to please.  It is based on the Biblical story of the dreamer, Joseph, who never gives up hope even after his brothers, through a jealous rage, sell him as a slave because they are tired of him being their father’s favorite son.  The coat of many colors that Jacob, their father, gave to Joseph was the final straw.  The story ends with repentance, forgiveness, and reconciliation.

Joey Williams’ Magic Show

Sign up in the Sun Porch during lunch to play in the Burrow game area for the chance to compete against the best foosball and ping pong players AGS has to offer.

Foreign Film Series
Hirokazu Kore-eda's film After Life (Japan 1998) brings our foreign film series to a close with a meditative exploration of how humanity, spirituality, and memory intertwine. Kore-eda's film asks:  If you could relive one single memory from your life, which would it be? Choose carefully, though, because you will be reliving this memory for all of eternity!

Human Foosball
Think you can play foosball better than those little men? Come give them a run for their money!

Dana Falconberry
You don’t want to miss this performance.  Dana Falconberry lights the senses of her listeners with desolate landscapes, tales of heartbreak, and signs of hope set to tune with a classical guitar and earthy voice.

Today, however, scientists are shedding light on just what love is. Join T.C. Elliott as he discusses why and how we fall in love, why some humans are more monogamous than others, and why love is a drug.

“The Last Survivor is a character-based, feature-length documentary that explores the idea of genocide in the 21st century. Following the lives of survivors of four different genocides and mass atrocities - The Holocaust, Rwanda, Darfur, and Congo - the film presents the stories of Survivors and their struggle to make sense of the tragedy by working to educate, motivate and promulgate a civic response to mass atrocity crimes. Offering real world examples of Survivors who have become powerful agents of change, The Last Survivor presents a unique opportunity to learn from the lessons and mistakes of our past in order to have lasting social impact on how we act collectively in the face of similar issues today” (www.thelastsurvivor.com).
