Dr. Karen Petersen was formally inaugurated as the 13th President of Hendrix College on Saturday, April 20, 2024. The ceremony was a celebration of the College’s 148-year history and its tradition of life-changing liberal arts education and campus life.
In her inaugural address, Our History of Excellence: A Foundation for the Future, President Petersen shared her deep appreciation for the College’s past and her excitement for the future. She honored Hendrix alumni, community partners, faculty, staff, and former leaders for their commitment and determination in guiding the College from its founding in Altus to its move to Conway in 1890 to its place as one of the country’s leading liberal arts colleges.

As the College approaches a period of strategic planning ahead of its 150-year anniversary, President Petersen said those plans will be centered on the College’s motto, “Unto the Whole Person,” and Statement of Purpose, which ends with “a commitment to inspire students to lead lives of accomplishment, integrity, service, and joy.”
“Rather than fear change, we must continue to welcome it—embrace it even—because change leads to growth and growth to thriving,” she said. “Our best will come because we are committed to honoring our past and adapting to the future.”
