Hendrix Chamber Players, Jazz Ensembles, and Composers Forum

CONWAY, Ark. (April 17, 2017) – The Hendrix College Department of Music presents A Chamber Players, Jazz Ensembles, and Composers Forum on Sunday, April 23, at 7:30 p.m. in Reves Recital Hall.

The jazz portion of the program features arrangements by the Hendrix College Jazz Band, directed by Dr. Barry McVinney, and members Sam Coker (tenor saxophone); Hayden Criswell (drums/percussion); Molly Harris (vocals); Christine Hayes (trombone); Jon Dale Nichols (trombone and banjo); Mimi Rebein (bass); Eli Spake (piano); Kennedy Valley (guitar and ukulele); and John Tate, (drums/percussion).

The group will perform:

  • Bemsha Swing by Thelonius Monk
  • The Boy from Ipanema by Antonio Carlos Jobim
  • All of Me by Gerald Marks and Seymour Simons

Following a brief pause, the program will include the world premiere of three compositions by Hendrix students:

  • Delaney Wells (mezzo-soprano) and Sam Melhorn (piano) perform Alone by Blythe Bull  
  • Caralee Shephard (oboe) and Hendrix music professor Dr. John Krebs (piano) perform Reflections of Spring by Danielle Rosson
  • Sydney Hickok will direct her composition I Could Float, featuring lyrics by Phil Krell, and performed by Noah Adams (bass), Chris Donnell (tenor II), Travis Howk (tenor I), Kathleen Mowrey (alto II), Delaney Wells (alto I), and Bridget Yelk (soprano).

Alto saxophonists Shuhau Kou and Justin Pogue will Duos for Saxophones, Opus 186 by Charles Koechlin, 19. Moderato tranquillo & 16. Allegretto con moto.
