Hendrix Students Take Top Honors in State Collegiate Poetry Contest

Poetry ContestCONWAY, Ark. (April 3, 2017) – Two Hendrix College students took home top honors at the statewide Jeannie Dolan Carter 2017 Collegiate Poetry Contest sponsored by the Poets’ Roundtable of Arkansas. 

Ellie Black ’18 of Clarksville, Arkansas, won first place and a $500 prize for her poem titled “reading the virgin suicides out loud.” An English/creative writing major, Black is editor-in-chief of Hendrix’s literary magazine, the Aonian. She has taken many poetry courses at Hendrix and received Hendrix-Murphy support to study creative writing last summer at New York University’s “Writers in New York” program. She was just published in Moledro magazine.

Anushah Jiwani ’17 of Albuquerque, N.M., won third place and a $200 prize for her poem titled “Halwa.” She recently took honors in the Southern Literary Festival writing competition and will graduate in May with a double major in English/creative writing and international relations – interests she deepened last summer while interning at PEN America in New York.  

The students are invited to read their winning poems at the Dr. Lily Peter Spring Celebration later this month in Benton.
