Hendrix Student Congress Wins Best Delegation

Student CongressCONWAY, Ark. (November 18, 2016) – A team of Hendrix College students won Best Delegation at the 48th Arkansas Communications and Theatre Arts Association Student Congress this month.

All team members won Superior or Excellent marks in Caucus, Committee, and Floor Debate categories.

The team included:

  • Jordan Borst ’19
  • Laura Durham ’19
  • Barrett Goodwin ’17
  • Steven Hulsey ’17
  • Chirag Lala ’17
  • Sarah Logan ’18
  • Lauren Mahaney ’17
  • Riley Wells ’17
  • Nathan Woodell ’17

Individual achievements included:

  • Steven Hulsey ’17 won the Mary Melekian Richardson Award as the highest-scoring delegate in the Senate.
  • Jordan Borst ’19 won the Marguerite Metcalf Award in Parliamentary Procedure.
  • Chirag Lala ’17 served as Senate President.
  • Steven Hulsey ’17 served as Senate Clerk.
  • Sarah Logan ’18 was elected Democratic Party Secretary.
  • Barrett Goodwin ’17, Nathan Woodell ’17, and Laura Durham ’19 all sought offices in the Democratic and Republican Party caucuses.

The Hendrix team had four bills this year:

  • Steven Hulsey ’17 and Chirag Lala ’17 submitted a bill to the Arkansas General Assembly that the Arkansas hot check law be amended.
  • Nathan Woodell ’17 and Laura Durham ’19 submitted a bill to the Arkansas General Assembly that restrictions on medical abortion be loosened to allow for telemedicine.
  • Barrett Goodwin ’17 and Jordan Borst ’19 submitted a bill to the Arkansas General Assembly that feminine hygiene products be exempted from state and local sales tax.
  • Sarah Logan ’18 and Lauren Mahaney ’17 submitted a bill to the United States Congress that military force in Burundi be authorized.

The bills by Hulsey and Lala, Woodell and Durham, and Goodwin and Borst all passed both the Senate (college section) and the House (high school section) to become Laws of Congress. The bill by Hulsey and Lala won 3rd place Best Bill.
