CONWAY, Ark. (November 2, 2016) – Hendrix College senior Chirag Lala ’17 has been named a finalist for the Marshall Scholarship.
An active member of the Hendrix student body, Lala’s research interests include heterodox economics and studying the state’s role in modern economies. He is the President of Student Congress, a third-year attorney on the Mock Trial Team, and the Business Manager of the
Profile.
In his junior year, Lala researched the relationship between foreign direct investment and economic growth using meta-regression analysis. His current research project involves investigating the impact of quantitative easing on financial markets. He also assists with politics
and international relations professor Dr. Daniel Whelan’s research for the fifth edition of International Human Rights.
Over the summer, Lala was a Public Policy and International Affairs Fellow at the University of Michigan, where he began preparing for a post-graduate career in the policy world.
Lala is a double-major in mathematical economics and international relations. He was born in Michigan and moved to Arkansas with his parents in 2010.
If awarded the Marshall Scholarship, Lala will pursue a master of arts degree in political economy at the University of Manchester and a master of philosophy degree in economic and social history at Cambridge University. He hopes to ultimately pursue a Ph.D. in economics and
work to increase public literacy in economics.
“I hope to revitalize the study of economics,” Lala said. “As a professor, policymaker, and public intellectual I will work to incorporate pluralistic theories and inspire people to explore economic policies for their cities, communities, and families.”
Lala will interview at the offices of the British Consulate-General in Houston, Texas on November 10.
