About
Sweeney Todd
The Sweeney Todd character became a staple of Victorian melodrama and London urban legend after first appearing as the villain of The String of
Pearls: A Romance (1846–47). In the original version, Todd is a London barber who finishes his customers off with his straight razor. After Todd has robbed his victims of their goods, Mrs. Lovett bakes their flesh into meat pies, which she sells in her pie shop. The tale has been retold
many times since, most notably in the Tony Award–winning Broadway musical by Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler.
