CONWAY, Ark. (July 1, 2016) – Nineteen Hendrix students spent four days in the chemistry, biology, and physics laboratories sharing their love of science and discovery with 53 rising third- to sixth-grade students. Since 2007, Hendrix students have organized and executed "Ridin' Dirty with Science,"
a two-day summer science camp for students from the Boys and Girls Club of Faulkner County. Student volunteers led two sessions of the camp designed to engage, excite, and educate children.
This year the students and campers performed some experiments on bacteria (“Caught Dirty Handed”), ecology (“What is that?”), phases of matter (“What’s a Matta?”), and physics (“Waving at Science”).
Hendrix biology professor Dr. Richard Murray guest lectured on bacteria and physics professor Dr. Todd Tinsley organized physics activities like the car pull (see the photo with President Tsutsui riding along).
Chemistry professor Dr. Liz Gron is the faculty advisor and education professor Dr. Dionne Jackson assisted the group. The camp is funded annually by a NSF-DUE science education grant, Hendrix Odyssey, and the Boys and Girls Club of Faulkner County.
“The major strength of this program is the low 2:1 child/teacher ratio (provided by 19 Hendrix student volunteers), which allows the children to explore at their own pace with their own personal scientist,” Dr. Gron said. “These 19 Hendrix science majors were responsible for all aspects of the program from working
with the Hendrix and Conway community partners, to setting up the laboratories, and teaching the science to the kids.”
