Dr. Allison Shutt’s book
Manners Make a Nation: Racial Etiquette in
Southern Rhodesia, 1910-1963
(University of Rochester Press, 2015) is a finalist for the inaugural Fage & Oliver Prize, awarded by the African Studies Association in the United Kingdom (ASAUK).

The prize, established in honor of British African Studies pioneers John Donnelly Fage and Roland Oliver, is awarded biennially to the author of an outstanding original scholarly work published on Africa during the preceding two years. The winner will be announced at the Biennial ASAUK
Conference at the University of Cambridge this fall.
The announcement praised Shutt’s book as an “original and engaging study” that provided “a rare and innovative exploration of the everyday language of race.”
“I’m thrilled that my book has been shortlisted for this prize. The shortlist includes some of the most important and creative books published in the last year,” said Shutt. “Naturally, I’m honored that my book is included in this list.”
Shutt, who joined the Hendrix history department in 1997, has published articles in leading journals in the field, including, the Journal of
African History, Journal of
Southern African Studies, African
Studies Review, and International
Journal of African Historical Studies. She is a contributor to the College’s Africana studies interdisciplinary program and has also participated in the gender studies interdisciplinary program, along with common courses for first-year students. She is co-coordinator of Distinguished Scholarships
with English professor Dr. Dorian Stuber
