CONWAY, Ark. (May 17, 2016) — Hendrix College alumnus and Odyssey Medal recipient Dr. John C. Byrd ’87 was recently named a 2016 Distinguished University Professor at The Ohio State University, the highest honor the university bestows on a faculty member. The Distinguished University Professor
title recognizes accomplishments in research, scholarly or creative work, teaching and service that are both distinguished and distinctive.
Dr. Byrd, director of the Division of Hematology in the Department of Internal Medicine, holds The D. Warren Brown Designated Chair in Leukemia Research. A member of the National Cancer Institute’s Leukemia Steering Committee, Dr. Byrd is chair of the
Leukemia Correlative Sciences Committee within the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology and a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation. He has published more than 400 papers related to clinical and laboratory investigation of acute myeloid leukemia and chronic lymphocytic leukemia. In
2014, he was rated in the top 10 percent of physicians in the nation for patient satisfaction.
Last week, Byrd was presented with the James Physician Champion of Nursing Award from The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute, which recognizes the collaboration and
partnership between the physician and nursing staff.
Hendrix students Mouad Abdulrahim, Sydney Fobare, Victoria Hughes, and Lexus Raney will be carrying out cancer research this summer at Ohio State University in Byrd’s lab.
