Two Student Groups Present Sociology and Anthropology Research

ASAA3 - Schwartzkopf, Nelsen, Anderson, Cartwright, and Parmer SfAA1 - McConaghie, Goldberg, McDavid, MorrowCONWAY, Ark. (April 26, 2016) – Two groups of Hendrix College sociology and anthropology students recently presented results of their undergraduate research.

Anthropology professor Dr. Stacey Schwartzkopf accompanied four Hendrix students to the ASAA Undergraduate Symposium at Arkansas Tech University in Russellville.

“Presenting at regional and national conferences gives our students the opportunity to relate their work to the world beyond Hendrix, and to gain valuable experience in interacting with other students and researchers in a professional setting,” said Schwartzkopf.

At ASAA, Arin Anderson ’16 presented “Hieroglyphic and Cuneiform Writing in the Hittite Empire.”

Bethany Cartwright ’16 presented "Too Often the Cream is Left to Curdle: A Critique of Tracking in U.S. Public Schools.”

Rebecca Nelsen ’16 presented "MOVE YOUR ASH: An Examination of Cigarette Smoking Culture and Policy at Hendrix College.”

Rachel Parmer ’16 presented “Stigma Management and 'Performance' of Sexual Minority Homeless Youth.”

Dr. Anne Goldberg accompanied three Hendrix students and an alumna to the annual Society for Applied Anthropology Conference in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Elissa McDavid ’17, Anna McConaghie ’16, and Shelby Morrow ’16 co-authored and presented a paper with Dr. Goldberg titled “Bringing It Home: Student Travel and Pedagogy to Supporting Social Activism,” and Ana Contreras ’13 presented “Devaluing Culture in Schools: The Imposition of White, Middle Class Concepts of Integrity.”

While at the conference, they were able to meet internationally renowned leaders in applied anthropology, including Dr. Paul Farmer.
