Hendrix Sophomores Share Research at ASGC Symposium

gardner_tumminello_asgc_croppedCONWAY, Ark. (April 18, 2016) – Two Hendrix College sophomores presented their undergraduate research at the Arkansas Space Grant Consortium (ASGC)’s 24th Annual Symposium in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

The symposium featured work from student and faculty scientists across the state who are working on projects connected to NASA missions.

William Gardner ’18 of St. Louis, Missouri, presented Magnetic Enhancements to Dark Matter Annihilation based on research he did in the lab of physics professor Dr. Todd Tinsley,

Ryan Tumminello ’18, also of St. Louis, presented Modeling Water Adsorption on Goethite based on research he did in the lab of Hendrix chemistry professor Dr. Courtney Hatch.

The students’ work began the summer after their freshman year.

“The quality of their work speaks for itself, but I was struck in particular by the depth to which these two young scientists understood their work and the facility in which they could explain it to experts and non-experts alike,” said Dr. Tinsley, who accompanied the students to the symposium. “As a faculty member I am thankful to work at an institution that supports research with undergraduates, particularly through the Odyssey program, and I'm especially grateful that Hendrix attracts the kinds of students, like William and Ryan, who can make meaningful contributions to advanced research after only one year of undergraduate study.”

This work would not be possible without the generous financial support of the Arkansas Space Grant Consortium. ASGC includes 17 four-year universities and colleges throughout Arkansas and actively promotes the involvement of Arkansas in NASA activities.
