Fobare, Sydney - 20160329 - 12034977CONWAY, Ark. (March 31, 2016) – Hendrix College junior Sydney Fobare ’17, a chemistry major from Franklin, Tennessee, recently received a Goldwater Scholarship by The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program.

Fobare recently received the Thomas J. Bardos Science Education Award for Undergraduate Students from the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR) for her summer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center under the mentorship of Hendrix alumnus Dr. John Byrd ’87, a nationally known researcher and clinical specialist in leukemia and other hematologic malignancies. Fobare is planning pursuing an M.D./Ph.D. in cancer biology and working on drug development to treat cancer after graduation.

Karthik Garimella ’17, a physics and computer science double major from Conway, was recognized as a Goldwater honorable mention. Garimella is presently interested in fusing his computation and physics interests into graduate work on computational physics.

“Hendrix’s success in this program is due to the quality of students we have and the excellent mentoring they receive from their instructors and research advisors,” said Hendrix physics professor Dr. Todd Tinsley, a 1998 Hendrix graduate and a 1997 Goldwater Scholar. Tinsley currently serves as the Hendrix faculty representative for the Goldwater Scholarship program.

Institutions may nominate up to four students for the Goldwater Scholarship. Travis Howk ’17 and Billy Gardner ’18 were also nominated this year, Tinsley said.
