Hendrix Junior Receives American Association of Cancer Research Science Education Award

Fobare, Sydney - 20160329 - 12034977CONWAY, Ark. (March 29, 2016) – Hendrix College junior Sydney Fobare ’17 recently received the Thomas J. Bardos Science Education Award for Undergraduate Students from the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR).

Fobare, a chemistry major from Franklin, Tennessee, received the award for her summer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center under the mentorship of Hendrix alumnus Dr. John Byrd ’87.

Byrd, a nationally known researcher and clinical specialist in leukemia and other hematologic malignancies, received the 2015 Hendrix Odyssey Medal for Research.

The AACR Science Education Awards, which support participation in two consecutive AACR annual meetings, are intended to inspire young science students to enter the field of cancer research and provide a unique educational opportunity for these students in the development of their careers in science.

“I studied the effect of EPZ011989, an enhancer of zeste homolog 2 inhibitor, in acute myeloid leukemia and will be presenting this research at this year's AACR Annual Meeting,” said Fobare. “I am very excited to attend the AACR Annual Meetings through the Bardos Award because I will be able to learn about the new procedures and techniques that are being implemented in cancer treatments. I look forward to participating in collaborative research in order to do my small part to help improve cancer treatment.”
