CONWAY, Ark. (March 18, 2016) — The Hendrix College Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Dr. Karen Griebling, will perform Soledad(solitude) on Monday, April 25, at 7:30 p.m. in Reves Recital Hall.
Soledad features music that celebrates the individual in his/her solo capacity, from solo performing artists and poets to the solitary gaucho (cowboy) on the Pampas of Argentina.
The featured solo artist for the program is the winner of the 2016 Annual Concerto and Aria Competition, violinist Jalin Parry of Little Rock, who will play the first movement, Allegro, from Mozart’s Concerto No. 3 K. 216, in G Major. Parry has played with the Arkansas Symphony
Youth Orchestra and studies violin with Magdalena Ryszkowski at Hendrix College. She is pursuing degrees in Economics and Music.
The program opens with the Sinfonia for
Strings composed by Julliard faculty member Eric Ewazen for bassist Marvin Topolsky and the International Sejong soloists (2009) with guest conductor Dr. Gretchen Renshaw.
The concert continues with settings of poetry by Cotton, Tennyson, Blake, Johnson, Keats, and others that comprise the Serenade
Opus 31 (1943) by Benjamin Britten with Matthew K. Tatus, tenor and Dr. Brent Shires, horn.
The evening will conclude with the First
Argentine Suite by Alberto Williams (1923) which was inspired by the legend of gaucho minstrel-poet Santos Vega as immortalized in the literature of Eduardo Guitierrez, Rafael Obligado, Hilario Ascasubi, and Bartolomeo Miore.
The concert is free and the public is invited. For more information contact Dr. Karen Griebling in the music department at 501 450 1249 or griebling@hendrix.edu.
