Raney Building Brick Project to Benefit Annual Fund and Scholarships

Campus Photo - 20100527 - 08302512 - Raney Bldg_ 2CONWAY, Ark. (March 11, 2016) – Hendrix College alumni and friends can own a piece of campus history.

The Raney Building will be taken down later this year to make way for the Mary Ann and David Dawkins Welcome Center, which will house the Hendrix Admission and Financial Aid offices.

Built in 1968, the Raney Building served as the College’s infirmary for two years. It was used for Education Department classes during the 1971-1972 academic year and became the home of the Religion and Philosophy departments in the fall 1972. Since then, the Raney lobby has been the site of the weekly Friday Afternoon Discussion series, where faculty, students, community members, and visiting experts meet to discuss topics ranging from the death penalty to sustainable economic growth, with an emphasis on the religious, moral, and philosophical aspects of the issues.

A limited number of bricks from the Raney Building will be preserved. Hendrix alumni and friends may acquire a Raney Building brick.

Each $100 brick includes a $60 tax-deductible charitable donation to one of the scholarship funds established in memory of Rev. Jon Guthrie ’56 or Dr. Francis Christie ’44 or by making a gift to the Hendrix Annual Fund. Gifts to the Annual Fund may be in honor or in memory of someone. Each brick will include a commemorative brass plate. The deadline for pre-ordering a Raney Building Brick is June 1, 2016.

For more information, contact Rev. J. Wayne Clark ’84, Associate Vice President for Development and Dean of the Chapel, at 501-450-4574 or clark@hendrix.edu, or visit www.hendrix.edu/raneybrickproject.

“The Raney Building was a special place for so many Hendrix students, whether they came for classes with legendary professors, a Friday Afternoon Discussion, or just to visit with classmates and faculty,” said Clark. “This project is a great way for alumni and friends to celebrate their connection to the Raney Building and support future Hendrix students.”

Hendrix will say so long to the Raney Building at a reception during Alumni Weekend 2016 on Saturday, April 16, from 11 a.m. to noon.

The reception, held in the Raney Building, will also honor two retiring faculty members: Mary Richardson, Instructor of Speech at Hendrix since 1979, and Stephen Kerr ’76, Virginia A. McCormick Pittman Distinguished Professor of Economics and Business, who has taught at Hendrix since 1979.
