Four Hendrix Seniors Named Fulbright Semifinalists

CONWAY, Ark. (January 19, 2016) – Four Hendrix College students were named Fulbright semifinalists by the Fulbright Scholarship National Screening Committee.

The Hendrix Fulbright semifinalists include:

  • Megan Hull ’16, German and international relations major, English Teaching Assistantship*, Germany
  • Justin Murdock ’16, chemistry and Spanish major, English Teaching Assistantship, Uruguay
  • Grace Oxley ’16, art and English major, English Teaching Assistantship, India
  • Rachel Zweig ’16, chemistry and mathematics major, Study/Research Grant**, Spain

* The Fulbright English Teaching Assistant programs place grantees in schools overseas to supplement local English language instruction and to provide a native speaker presence in the classrooms.

**Study/research grant applicants design their own projects and will typically work with advisers at foreign universities or other institutes of higher education. If awarded, Zweig would work with the Group of Bioinspired Materials of the Spanish Research Council in Madrid to “develop and analyze new eutectic solvents as an efficient and cost-effective means of carbon capture.”

Although not a final grant decision, the Fulbright Scholarship National Screening Committee has recommended the students for further consideration by host-country Fulbright organizations.  Final decisions regarding grants will be made during the last stage of the competition between now and June.

“This year’s Hendrix applicants were outstanding as a group, in terms of Hendrix achievement, outside activities, and enthusiasm for the Fulbright opportunity,” said Alan Eastham, Senior Fellow at Hendrix and retired U.S. Ambassador. “Whether chosen or not, these students have met a tough challenge by being selected for final consideration at the national level. We all wish them well as the application process continues.”
