CONWAY, Ark. (January 12, 2016) — The 2016 art gallery schedule for Hendrix College has been released.

small works_finalArkansas Small Works on Paper

Hendrix is proud to host the Small Works on Paper. The 29th annual Small Works touring art exhibition showcases artwork no larger than 18 x 24 inches by Arkansas artists who are members of the Arkansas Artist Registry, an online gallery promoting the artwork of Arkansas artists. Coordinated by the Arkansas Arts Council, the 2016 exhibition features 40 works by 38 Arkansas artists and will travel to 10 galleries throughout the state in a year-long touring show.

The entries were juried by Kati Toivanen, artist and professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Ten artists were selected by Toivanen to receive purchase awards. Funded by entry fees, the purchase award pieces become part of the exhibition's permanent collection.

dr_ choi_finalShine Choi Lecture — North Korean Art and Politics: An Aesthetic Consideration

Dr. Choi is currently the Korea Foundation Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Mississippi. She received her PhD from Queen’s University Belfast School of Politics, International Studies and Philosophy (UK). Her recent book is titled Reimagining North Korea in International Politics: Problems and Alternatives (Routledge 2015). She has written numerous journal articles and book chapters on love, borders and the color grey.   

Dr. Choi’s lecture will draw from her current research on art and aesthetics in cultural diplomacy and formation of global civil society. She looks at her topic through the empirical and conceptual prism of modern North Korea. The talk will introduce North Korean art theory, noteworthy North Korean paintings and artists, as well as the emerging global interest in North Korean art. Dr. Choi asks: What does it mean for us to view North Korean art? What kind of ethical and political questions should we be asking in viewing North Korean art? What does North Korean art want from us?

joe morzuch_finalJoe Morzuch Lecture

Morzuch graduated in 2006 with an MFA in Painting from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. He is currently Area Head of the Painting and Drawing Department at the Memphis College of Art.  He actively exhibits his work nationwide and has recently shown at Gallery 56 in Memphis and the Historic Arkansas Museum in Little Rock. Morzuch makes observational paintings that examine the process of painting and the structure of painted vision. His subjects celebrate the commonplace and overlooked aspects of everyday life. Morzuch will lecture on his work.

pokempner_finalMarch PoKempner Lecture

PoKempner is an independent photojournalist based in Chicago and New Orleans. He is interested in social issues and works on assignment for print, film and electronic publications, and on projects of his own invention. He holds a B.A. from the University of Chicago in Philosophical Psychology and attended the yearlong MIT Graduate Program in Creative Photography. PoKempner will discuss his work with Chicago Blues, Chicago Mayor Harold Washington, and President Obama.

women to watch_finalArkansas Women to Watch 2016

Hendrix is pleased to participate in the Arkansas Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) tour of its biennial statewide exhibit Arkansas Women to Watch: 2016.  The tour will travel to various Arkansas institutions from December 2015 – May 2017.  The exhibit features contemporary drawings, paintings, photography, and a mixed-media installation that represent unique interpretations of Nature within its historic and contemporary associations.

driesbach_finalDavid F. Driesbach Print Show and Lecture by his son John Driesbach

Hendrix is proud to present 19 master prints donated to the College by David F. Driesbach. His prints display a theatrical interest in humorous story telling in the context of dynamic composition. Driesbach, printmaker and educator, was born in Wisconsin in 1922 joining the Marines and serving in the South Pacific Theater during World War II.

After his service, Driesbach continued his education under the G.I. Bill at Beloit College, University of Wisconsin, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and University of Iowa. He was a member of the first generation of students to study under Mauricio Lasansky. After studying with Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17 in New York and France, Driesbach became renowned for viscosity printing. He was invited to demonstrate viscosity printing technique through workshops at colleges, universities, and print centers across the country.

Driesbach’s teaching career spanned five decades. Over his career he taught at Hendrix College, Iowa State Teachers College, Millikin University, University of Ohio, and Northern Illinois University. During this time, Driesbach exhibited in over 250 one-man shows. In 2000, David Driesbach received the Mid America Print Council Printmaker Emeritus Award, and in 2012, he received the Southern Graphics Council Emeritus award.

His son John Driesbach will deliver a lecture on his father’s work. John is an esteemed Printmaker as well. Driesbach received his MFA from Indiana University in 1978 where he worked with David Keister, Master Printer at Echo Press. He taught at California State University in Sacramento from 1981 to 2007 and currently lives in Akron, Ohio. Driesbach has exhibited in private galleries, numerous regional and national juried competitions. Since 2001 Driesbach has been active in the exchange portfolio movement, being invited to participate in, and create many portfolios.

gill_finalMelissa Gill Sabbatical Print Show

Professor Gill will show works created during her sabbatical in the spring of 2015. Her mixed media prints examine spirituality and personal transformation through figuration and abstraction. Often incorporating sewing with tradition print and collage techniques Gill creates figures and spaces bathed on atmospheric color.
