CONWAY, Ark. (January 4, 2016) –
Five Hendrix College students were recently awarded summer research
internships.
Mouad Abdulrahim ’17,
Victoria Hughes ’17, and Lexus Raney ’18 will work with Hendrix alumnus Dr. John C. Byrd
’87, a nationally known researcher and clinical specialist in leukemia and
other hematologic malignancies at Ohio State University’s Comprehensive Cancer
Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute.
Sydney Fobare ’17
and Grace Griffin ’17 worked with Dr. Byrd last summer 2015 and were invited
back this summer.
This fall, Byrd received the Hendrix
Odyssey Medal for Research. He is the head of
the Division of Hematology. He is a professor of medicine and medicinal
chemistry and holds the D. Warren Brown Chair in Leukemia Research.
Dr. Byrd and his lab
manager Mr. Derek West, along with Hendrix biology professor Dr. Andrea Duina
and Hendrix chemistry professor Dr. Tom Goodwin, reviewed the student
applications.
“We had a very
strong applicant pool this year, thus we had to make some difficult decisions,”
said Goodwin. “Dr. Byrd and Mr. West continue to sing the praises of the
wonderful Hendrix students that have participated in their summer research
program.”
