Student Senate

Minutes 04.05.11

Agenda

Tuesday April 5, 2010

6:30 p.m. Campbell Dining Room

Student Life and Technology Center

I. Call to Order

II. Special Business

  • Senior Senator Announcement: Congrats to Lauren Whitmore!
  • Aonian Budget- Colleen Mayo
    • Due to an increase in response and overall improvement in the quality of the magazine, the Aonian has added extra pages and is now roughly $7,000 over budget.
    • The magazine has been sent to the printer, and Colleen must notify them ASAP about how many to publish.
    • A formal proposal will go to FinCom this weekend, however we did consider a couple of issues
      • $7000 is a lot of money, and we really only have about $25,000 left in the discretionary funds, which will have to last not only through may, but also the first month of next year.
    • People who have submitted work have already received notification that their work will be published, how do we decide what work to cut?
      • Perhaps take out pieces from individuals who submitted multiple proposals.
    • Just print fewer copies? (There are many copies still hanging around FOR FREE—GRAB ONE—do we really need to print as many, or even more?
      • More participation=a need for more copies…
  • FILING
    • Filing for chairs has closed
    • Filing for vice hairs has opened (SEE GABE’S EMAIL)
  • Elections Committee with Rachel Robbins
    • Proposed 2011-2012 committee
      • Mika Smith
      • Caroline Craig
      • Kathryn Powell
      • Landon McGarry
      • Pierre Urisanga
      • Jacob Halpern-Weitzman
    • Approved no objections/abstentions

III. Announcements and Constituent Concerns

  • (Hunter) PSafe Officer went into a constituent’s room without advanced notice and got in trouble for having stuff that was visible in his room.
    • Dean Wiltgen can tell the constituent more in person
      • BUT times when PSafe can come in unannounced that he has no control over:
        • Emergencies
        • Safety checks
    • Dr. Carney Hall- The college does its best to honor students’ privacy, but we must remember this is college-owned housing, with rules…
  • Hanging Tags (Wes)
    • Audrey talked to PSafe, they are frustrated because it would cost a lot of money, and make it harder/less efficient for PSafe officers to check a car in one of the lots, because they would have to go around and see the front window instead of just going through the parking lot and checking the backs of the car.
    • HOWEVER, you can just go to PSafe and get multiple stickers if you have other cars you use at Hendrix FOR FREE as long as you have paid for your first!
  • Leftover funds (Audrey)
    • $10,000 to make beds bunk-able in Raney (need that bar to be up to safety regulations)
      • RA informed it would cost ~10k, and many constituents are interested
        • Is this sustainable for entire HDX community?
        • Dean Wiltgen will look into it to, and see just how much it will really cost. Sounds like more of a college capital funding cost than a student activities fee cost.
    • Psafe wants to start a parking appeals committee? More details to come
    • WAC-We do not have the right paddles for Kayaks and we only have 2 paddles for 4 kayaks? (Anvesh will check it out)
  • GNH (Emily Childress)
    • Another constituent sent praise, again, only frustration was that we found out about the program a bit late in the game, and many had already made plans.
  • Galloway Girls Would like an interior key card reader/feel it is a Safety concern (Annie)
    • Currently 2 key card readers, but on the side and the front (one of which is the handicapped entrance)
    • Is it really a safety concern or a convenience concern
      • Dean thinks this is more of a ‘capital’ request
  • Pretty good lighting on the campus—light walk
  • Village Stairs/labeling (Taylor Kidd)
    • Village stairwells are confusing, can we get more signage/labels?
      • Especially troublesome considering that the elevators weren’t working this weekend.
    • Dean Wiltgen will look into it
