Alex Vernon published two books, Hemingway's Second War: Bearing Witness to the Spanish Civil War, and the co-edited book Approaches to Teaching the Works of Tim O'Brien; and essays in WLA: War, Literature, & the Arts; The Mailer Review; Ivens Magazine; and Papa PhD: Essays on Fatherhood by Men in the Academy. He was also an author/speaker at the Arkansas Literary Festival.

Kristi McKim presented an invited lecture, "Cinephilia as Sensual Film History in The Dreamers," at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale (Department of Cinema and Photography).
Dorian Stuber became a contributing editor for the Bryn Mawr Journal of Comparative Literature as well as reviewer for Choice.
Tyrone Jaeger attended the AWP annual conference (Denver, CO) and the Hillhouse Writer's Retreat. Three of his prose pieces appeared in The Exquisite Corspe Annual
AY 2008-2009
The department welcomed Kristi McKim (Film Studies), Will Hacker (19th Century British Literature), and Tyrone Jaeger (writer-in-residence) to its halls.
Hope Coulter participated in an "Evening of Arkansas Authors" with Trent Lee Stewart and Kevin Brockmeier. She published a poem in Slant XXII and an essay in Little Rock's Soiree magazine. She also received a nomination for the annual Pushcart Prize.
Alice Hines took her Hawthorne seminar students to Salem. Tyrone Jaeger published a story in The Rio Grande Review, and his story collection Our Love Stories Are Ghost Stories was a finalist for the St. Lawrence Book Award.
Kristi McKim presented the keynote address at “Fortunes of Gender,” Penn State Behrend's Women’s Studies and Literature Conference and a paper at Screened Sexuality:Desire in Russian, Soviet, and Post-Soviet Cinema (Columbia University Society of Fellows in the Humanities); and she published articles in Studies in French Cinema and Camera Obscura.
Dorian Stuber presented an essay on D.H. Lawrence's The Rainbow at the Art Since 1900 Conference in Lousville, KY
Alex Vernon published On Tarzan, appeared on NPR's Diane Rehm Show to discuss A Farewell to Arms, and led a dicussion on undergraduate research in the Humanities or the faculty at Westminster College. He pubished an essay in the inaugural issue of Consequence, appeared at the annual Arkansas Literary Festival, and led a Hendrix-Lilly mission trip to Vietnam.
Carol West won a Fulbright grant to take teachers on a summer study trip to The Gambia and Senegal.

The department welcomed Dorian Stuber as its newest member, in 20th and 21st century British literature, and literary theory.
Hope Coulter published two poems in the Spoon River Poetry Review: "The Last Joke" and "Giving Music" (second runner-up for Editor's Prize). She was a Top 100 Semifinalist in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Contest, a runner-up for the Matt Clark Poetry Prize (New Delta Review).
Carol West participated in an African Writers at Work conference.
Alex Vernon spoke by invitation on Hemingway and war literature at an NEH "Big Read" in Oak Park, Illinois, and at a panel on creative nonfiction at the nonprofit educational organization 726 Valencia in San Franciso. He was also appointed to serve as a commissioner on the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History board.

Alex Vernon published an article in the online journal EnterText. He was visiting faculty at Univ. of Mass.-Boston's Writer's Workshop. He also received grants to research at the JFK library and the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center (UT-Austin).

Bland Crowder retired from full-time teaching after over thirty years at Hendrix. Bland, you are missed.
Hope Coulter's poems "The Anti-House" and "The Lounge" appeared in Arkansas Literary Forum (fall 2006). In the spring, she attended the Associated Writing Program's annual convention.
Alex Vernon had an essay published in WLA: War, Literature, and the Arts (winter 2007), and in the spring he participated in a panel on war literature with Tim O'Brien and Lloyd Little (UNC-Chapel Hill).

Alex Vernon presented a paper at the biennial international Hemingway conference (Spain), and he had an essay appear in the New York Times Op-Ed section.

Alice Hines used her sabbatical semester to investigate writing programs across the country.
Bland Crowder spent the year teaching American Literature in Poland as a Fulbright Fellow.
Alex Vernon published a memoir, most succinctly bred, and presented a paper at The Vietnam War in Literature and Film conference (University of Hawaii)

Bland Crowder's Wakeful Anguish, A Literary Biography of William Humphreywon the 2005 Best Book award for the South Central Modern Language Association and the Best Book award for the South Atlantic Modern Language Association.

Alex Vernon was a visiting writer at Roanoke College, where he presented a lecture and visited classes. He also gave a lecture at the 39th Annual TOm Peyton Memorial Arts Festival in Louisiana.
Alice Hines organized a workshop on effective teaching methods for college students with disabilities.
Bland Crowder is on sabbatical this year working on an edition of a Robert Browning book and a collection of essays on Seamus Heaney.

Carol West organized and hosted her annual international conference on "Teaching West African Women Writers."
Chuck Chappell taught a course on Edgar Allen Poe for the LifeQuest organization in Little Rock. This was the eighth time in nine years he has taught a LifeQuest program.
Alex Vernon presented a paper at the biennial international Hemingway conference in Key West.

The University of Iowa Press published Alex Vernon's Soldiers Once and Still: Ernest Hemingway, James Salter, and Tim O'Brien, a book "highly recommended" by the American Library Association. Vernon also presented a paper at the SCMLA annual conference.
The LSU Press published Ashby Bland Crowder's Wakeful Anguish, A Literary Biography of William Humphrey.
Kevin Asman presented a paper on British modernism and the 1930s at the Dylan Thomas Center in Swansea, Wales. Alex Vernon presented a paper on Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls at the annual SCMLA conference.
Carol West organized and hosted an international conference on "Teaching West African Women Writers."
