Audition Requirements

Please note: Auditions are for seniors only.

Audition Requirements for the Music Department

Auditions for music scholarships at Hendrix entail:

  • Completing the online music scholarship application;
  • Submitting a video of you performing two contrasting pieces of music for their instrument/voice; and
  • Meeting with a Hendrix music faculty member via Microsoft Teams.

Additionally, please note the following requirements.

  • Students must submit their audition video via a sharable link (through Google, Drop Box, Microsoft One Drive, etc.) to Jenn McKenzie (mckenziej@hendrix.edu) in the Admission Department, and she will forward to the appropriate music faculty member.
  • In addition to the audition video, a PDF of the music being performed must be submitted.
  • Submitted videos should show the student from the front and should include the entire person in the picture, not just a close-up of their face or the instrument.
  • If applicable, students should perform with a live accompanist rather than a pre-recorded piano track.
  • Students should introduce the names of the pieces and composers they are performing.
  • Only students who have completed their application for admission to Hendrix College will be allowed to audition.
  • During their Teams meeting with faculty, applicants may be asked to sightread or perform scales, depending on the requirements of the specific area.

Audition materials must be received by the Office of Admission, and faculty meetings completed by March 8, 2022. Contact information for various instruments is below along with preferred meeting days.

Audition Requirements for the Theatre Arts and Dance Department

Dance Auditions:

Auditions must be scheduled through the Office of Admission by contacting Jenn McKenzie (mckenziej@hendrix.edu). Specific questions about dance auditions or the dance department may be directed to Professor Brigitte Rogers at rogersb@hendrix.edu.

  • Dancer will need to perform two contrasting pieces no longer than two minutes each (total of four minutes of movement maximum) that demonstrate the dancer’s creative, technical and performance strengths. Example: One modern piece and one jazz piece, or one percussive modern piece and one lyrical modern piece. Ballet pointe work is not required but is an option the dancer may use.
  • Dancer will need to be prepared for an improvisational movement series given by the Hendrix dance instructor.
  • A short interview will follow the performance part of the audition.

Theatre Auditions (Performance and Technical)

Auditions must be scheduled through the Office of Admission by contacting Jenn McKenzie (mckenziej@hendrix.edu). Theatre auditions are performed with either another auditionee or a current Hendrix student in the theatre department.

  • The audition itself is a cold reading. You will not need to have anything prepared for the audition. Students may submit a résumé, but a portfolio is not required.

Specific questions about theatre auditions or the theatre department may be directed to Professor Ann Muse at muse@hendrix.edu.
