The Hendrix Committee for International & Intercultural Studies (CIIS) must authorize all students to pursue study abroad. This includes students studying through Hendrix programs, Hendrix-affiliated programs, and external or independent programs. The Committee will review applications and approve students to continue with the next phase of their study abroad plans, typically a program-specific application required by the host institution or provider, interview, etc.
New this year: The study abroad application can be found in CampusWeb under Academics (beginning September 28, 2023). Please note the following deadlines:
- Monday, November 6, 2023 (11:59 pm): Deadline for all summer 2024 programs, the Oxford Honours Programme (AY 2024-25), and the Irish American Scholars Program (fall 2024 or spring 2025).
- Wednesday, January 24, 2024 (11:59 pm): Deadline for all fall 2024, spring 2025, or AY 2024-25 programs
- As of November 2023, there are still spaces available on Hendrix-Murphy Summer Language Programs, Hendrix-in-Tours and Hendrix-in-Costa Rica. Students may apply for CIIS authorization to pursue these programs through January 24, 2024. Please note current seniors graduating in May 2024 are ineligible to participate, and final acceptance to each program will be at the discretion of the faculty trip leader(s).
Before you launch the application form: Meet with your academic advisor to discuss your degree progress and plans for study abroad (for semester programs), identify a Hendrix instructor who agrees to serve as your academic reference, and draft your application essay. You will need to complete the application in one sitting. GPA requirements for admission vary from program to program, but most require a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or better.
The application includes the following components:
- Academic Planning Meeting (for semester programs): Meet with your academic advisor prior to submitting your application to discuss your remaining degree requirements and plans for study abroad. As part of the application process, your advisor will be asked to certify they have met with you and approve of your plans. Please refer to the Academic Planning Notes prior to and during your meeting with your advisor.
- Program Selection: You will be able to select up to 3 programs of interest. Important: Students may not study abroad during the final semester of their senior year.
- Academic Reference: Provide the name and email address of a Hendrix faculty member, i.e. a professor or instructor, who has had you in class. The reference may not be a coach, staff member, instructor outside the Hendrix community, or your academic advisor. Please contact your reference in advance to confirm they are willing to submit a brief recommendation form on your behalf. When you submit your application, they will automatically receive the link to the recommendation form. For applications due November 6, references have until November 10 to complete their recommendation forms. For applications due January 24, recommendation forms should be completed by January 30.
- Essay: Submit a 400-500 word essay addressing the following prompt. Draft and revise your essay in Word first, then upload the document to your application once complete. Essay prompt:
Please explain what you feel has prepared you for undertaking the proposed program of study away, how you believe you would benefit from the experience, and how it would complement your degree program at Hendrix and, if applicable, your future career goals. Please also comment on how you will approach unfamiliar and challenging situations while away.
