What Do You Need to Decide on a Career?

When it comes to deciding your life's work, chances are, you're not just going to want to get a ''job.'' Certainly, jobs can take care of monetary needs, and getting a job just for the financial security is certainly something that you will probably want to do at least at certain times of your life. For example, you may work a variety of jobs while you're in school both to pay for school and to get job experience for later on in your career.

When it comes to actually deciding on your career itself, though, you're going to want to choose something that you're both talented at and love to do. So, for example, if you love to work with numbers, and if you like helping people figure out what to do with their money, how to invest it, and so on, you may want to embark on a career as a financial advisor. Or, for example, you may want to become a certified public accountant.

Unpaid Internships Can Cost - or Pay Off for - College Students

Pennsylvania State University sophomore Elysia Mann, 18, is spending her summer in New York City working at two fashion internships — both unpaid.
If her parents weren't covering the nearly $3,000 in housing and food expenses for staying in New York University's dorms for the summer, Mann probably would be back home in Philadelphia.

Although she's working 48 hours each week for no compensation, Mann says this is something she "has to do" if she wants to go into the fashion industry.

"It's frustrating," she says. "I know they're not going to pay me because I know there's always somebody who would take this instead of me."

Using Social Media in Your Job Search

Fortunately, my previous job allowed me to experiment and learn the many ways in which a number of social mediums are used for personal, professional and business purposes. So, I decided to put these tools to the test.

My first step was to update my resume and my personal web site. These would serve as the foundation for all information about me. But, much more essential to networking, I needed to update my LinkedIn profile with relevant information and recommendations from former colleagues, and join the Sodexo Careers – Past, Present & Future networking group. Having done some quick searches, I found that key Sodexo people had profiles on LinkedIn – and I wanted them to be able to find my profile, too.

How Much Do Grades Matter?

There are two very difficult classes that I am considering for next semester. They are both in my major but are typically reserved for seniors. I am only a sophomore, but my Professor has given me permission to take them. A senior in my fraternity, whom I really respect and think is super smart, took one of the classes as a junior and he got a C! He loved the course and highly recommends it. But if he got a C, that means that I could get a C or worse!

Right now I have a 3.7 GPA. I want to apply for a very competitive internship at either a consulting firm or an investment banking firm next year. I'm afraid that if I do poorly in these classes, it will effect my GPA and ruin my chances of getting an internship.

Do you recommend that I take these difficult classes? How much do my grades matter when applying for internships and full-time jobs?

If you are interviewing for a highly competitive position or looking for a job in a down market, you can’t afford to make these common mistakes.

1. Insufficient knowledge of key job details. At a high level, most people understand the key skills relevant for their target job (e.g. teamwork, communication, problem solving), but do you also know the types of analysis performed in the job, and the deliverables that are handed off to managers or clients? Do you know what other departments or constituencies you would interact with and why? It will be very obvious to the interviewer if you don’t understand the job well enough. Well before your interview, make sure to talk to someone with direct experience in that job. Make sure you can answer these questions about the job before your interview.

Science Education and Job Prospects: What are the Facts?

A very interesting article by Vivek Wadhwa posted recently on www.businessweek.com. The article examines popular political and public perceptions that the US is falling behind in educating and employing scientists. Wadhwa insists that the opposite is actually the case and provides a recent case study in the subject for proof. He cites sustained improvement in science education in terms of both quality and numbers. He also notes that the available jobs for recent graduates in science fields are actually fewer than those seeking positions. He points out that heeding calls for increases in numbers graduating with science or engineering backgrounds could result in many of those graduates taking positions in non-science related fields due to a shortage of jobs for them. His arguments make the case for improved science education initiatives that are also accompanied by job creation in these fields. Wadhwa’s closing arguments are supportive of a strong liberal arts background and continued investment into businesses which promote sustainability and provide innovative technical opportunities for college grads.

“We need our children to receive a balanced and broad education. Perhaps we should focus on creating demand for the many scientists and engineers we graduate. Resume Tips

We review resumes almost daily. Sometimes we review several per day. Our office is always glad to provide this service to students and alumni as it is also one of the most important steps in the job search, career planning, and even grad school application process. As always, feel free to call, email, or stop by if you would like to have your resume reviewed. We will personally look over your resume and make reccomendations based on your particular situation and based on your resume content. If you need help just getting something down on paper, make sure you check out our resume handout located here. Following is a summary of our most frequent resume reccomendations.

Do not use a template for your final draft. Your resume will not have a unique look or feel. It also may be difficult to add content and shift the format or headings.
Use minimal margins for your page layout. 1/2 or 3/4 inch margins all around usually look great.
Watch for spelling errors (advice we could use for this blog at times as well)
Make sure that your profile, objective, or experience descriptions are unique and specific. Prove your experience and qualifications. Do not waste space with content that would work for any other cadidate applying for the same position or describe anyone who worked in a similar position.
Always include your cover letter and reference if you are applying directly for a specific position. However, use care when including these in posting your resume to a general job board.
Don't think of your resume as a static/single document. Adapt it as needed or create multiple resumes. e.g. one for positions related to your major and one for positions related to your experience.

Job Satisfaction and Career Planning

The Labor Day weekend is always a prime time for career and employment news items. Particularly interesting are reports regarding the University of Chicago’s most recent studies related to job satisfaction. Here are a few highlights and career services observations:

Workers in South Central states (including Arkansas) were most satisfied with their jobs. (Factor geography into your career planning)
People working in helping or creative professions expressed high job satisfaction ratings. (Consider working with a non-profit or pursuing your artistic ambitions)
Job satisfaction increases with age.
(Your first job may not be perfect, that’s ok, your career path is a progressive journey)
Job satisfaction increases with education-those with graduate degrees reported the highest ratings. (Strongly consider graduate school-the rewards go beyond earnings potential)

Opportunities of the Week

We were planning to use a routine Friday post to highlight a single Jobline opportunity; however, this week there are simply too many great opportunities to limit our blog post to only one.

-Teach for America has posted their call for 2008 corps members. This is an excellent service opportunity. They seek students from all majors: check out their listing on Jobline if you would like to learn more.
-We also recently received a note concerning an excellent opportunity with DuoShare. The open position is Software Development Engineer. Email us as soon as possible if you would like more info.

Shale Symposium Synopsis

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to attend the 2007 Fayetteville Shale Symposium. If you are not familiar with the Fayetteville Shale play, Arkansas Business, the symposium organizer has all of the details you need – they will also have the symposium presentation outlines posted online soon. The shale play provides a tremendous opportunity for new job creation. For example, Southwestern Energy, just one of the companies involved in the Fayetteville Shale play currently has thirty job postings in Conway alone. These jobs include some advanced technical and administrative roles. Several accounting positions are also posted with Southwestern.

Some additional reflections on the symposium:
-The extraction of natural gas from the Fayetteville shale offers great economic opportunity to the area and the state through economic investment, community patronage, and the potential for new, high-paying jobs.
-There are also important environmental concerns and the state environmental agency (ADEQ) is working to make sure there is minimal environmental impact.
- From the company, investment, and legal speakers, I gathered that the enthusiasm for these opportunities should be tempered with realistic expectations: There will be declining values from drilling operations, the operations basically only offset traditional vertical drilling of the past, and energy prices will determine whether continued and expanded operations are economically feasible.
