Dressing the part
Things are little different at Hendrix – and we like it that way. Our new students
are invited to participate in a tradition begun more than 100 years ago that involves
wearing long-sleeve button-down shirts with shorts or boxers and dancing in the
middle of the "Brick Pit," a prime performance spot at the center of campus. We
call it Shirttails and it started in 1903 after Hendrix beat Ole Miss in football.
Now it's a Hendrix tradition that marks the beginning of the fall semester.
Doing good
Giving back is another Hendrix tradition. For more than 65 years, Hendrix students
have organized an annual charity event called Campus Kitty that raises money to
support local nonprofit organizations, from food pantries and homeless shelters
to women's centers and single-parent scholarship funds. The student-directed event
is a ton of fun for the whole campus and fuels a little residence hall rivalry.
Dining with heart
No one complains about the cafeteria food. It's award-winning (really!) and the
personality of the people who work there make it the heart of your Hendrix home.
It's also a place where several Hendrix traditions began.
- If you pick up a "disco" tray in the cafeteria you'll have good luck all
day.
- Birthdays are special: You'll get a cake and a song from the cafeteria staff
and your friends might toss you in the fountain as part of the celebration.
- Name that theme! Every month, theme-day lunches in the cafeteria celebrate
historical milestones, holidays and a whole host of "inspired" ideas that are
uniquely Hendrix.
Your First Experience
Your welcome to Hendrix starts with Orientation, highlighted by a trip during
your first week on campus. You'll pile into a van or small bus with a small group
of other new students, student leaders, faculty and staff and head out for a weekend
adventure. You'll return to campus with new friends who will make the rest of your
introduction to college life even more fun.
Living Together
- About 85% of our students live in college-owned housing. Your Hendrix residence
hall will influence your college experience in a most extraordinary way; each
has its own distinct character, architecture, and activities.
- Hendrix students are diverse, eclectic, open-minded, politically active,
committed to social justice, and concerned about environmental issues.
- Hendrix has no fraternities or sororities so everyone is welcome at all
social activities.
Playing Together
- Hendrix offers 21 NCAA Division III intercollegiate sports for men and women.
- Thirty percent of Hendrix students compete in intercollegiate athletics
and 75% of students participate in intramurals, club sports, and outdoor recreation
or fitness and wellness programs.
- Student-athletes train and compete in nationally-recognized facilities.
The Hendrix Wellness and Athletics Center and playing fields were named 13th
best NCAA facility in the nation by The Princeton Review.
- Hendrix is a founding member of the Southern Athletic Association conference
and competes against academic-focused Division III peers.
