Hope Coulter

Hope Coulter Staff 2Hope Coulter, Director, is a fiction writer and poet whose poetry collection, The Wheel of Light, was released in spring 2015 as part of the New Poets Series of BrickHouse Press.  She has won numerous awards for her writing, including the 2014 Laman Library Writers Fellowship, two Pushcart nominations, Arkansas’s Porter Prize for Literary Excellence, and the Short Story Award of Louisiana Life magazine. Her novels The Errand of the Eye and Dry Bones were published in 1988 and 1990 by August House Publishers, and her children’s picture book, Uncle Chuck’s Truck, came out in 1993 from Bradbury Press. Hope grew up in Alexandria, Louisiana, and earned her AB at Harvard University and her MFA at Queens University of Charlotte.  She has taught creative writing at Hendrix since 1993.

Henryetta Vanaman


Henryetta Vanaman, Program Manager, organizes and facilitates programs and events, handles publicity, and administers program evaluation. She has been with the Hendrix-Murphy Foundation since 2002, when the Bertie Wilson Murphy Building first opened. She graduated summa cum laude from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock with degrees in English and Studio Art (concentrations in Sculpture and Photography) and a minor in Urban Studies and Design. As a Donaghey Scholar at UALR, she also studied French at the Université d’Orléans in Orléans, France.

Sarah Engeler-Young

EngelerYoungAs Office & Building Manager, Sarah Engeler-Young provides administrative support for the Foundation and manages the Bertie Wilson Murphy Building. She graduated from Hendrix with degrees in Sociology and Theatre Arts and holds an MA in Theatre History and Criticism from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Sarah has taught theatre history and dramatic theory in the Hendrix theatre arts department and was also the alumni winner of the 1994 Hendrix-Murphy Playwriting Contest. She is happy to help members of the campus community plan events in the Murphy House and can also answer all Murphy-related purchasing and accounts payable questions.
