Guide to Academic Planning 2018-2019

Health Sciences

(Students interested in any health-related field should also refer to the  Health Related Fields guidelines.)

The Health Science major consists of 13 courses distributed between nine core classes, including an internship, and four elective classes chosen from a list, two of which must be 300 level or above.  The major is particularly designed to support students who are interested in attending health care career programs after graduation. These include chiropractic, dental, medical, nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, physician assistant, and public health programs. Students preparing for these programs should consult the admission requirements for individual programs to which they are interested in applying because specific course requirements vary from school to school.

Students, both new students and returning students, should take BIOL 150 Cell Biology and both CHEM 110 General Chemistry I and CHEM 120 General Chemistry II in the first year of pursuing a Health Sciences major.

*It is recommended that students complete an internship during the summer between the sophomore and junior years, and the internship needs to be completed prior to the start of the senior year. The internship may be completed during the summer or during the academic year.  It may be taken as a class with course credit (HESC 496) and will count in the course load or without course credit (HESC 495).

**If student is planning to take BIOL 250 Genetics, it should be taken by the fall of the junior year because it is a common prerequisite for some of the upper level biology classes on the list.
