Hendrix Presidential Fellows
As graduating seniors, we know that many you are pursuing
“gap year” experiences where you hope to find meaningful, but short-term
employment, before pursuing graduate or professional school. Programs like Teach for America,
Americorp, and City Year are capitalizing on some of our best talent to staff
important service programs across the country.
We are confident that entry-level staff positions at Hendrix could
benefit from similar energy, campus knowledge, and leadership experience to
contribute to our campus priorities.
Furthermore, we believe that we can create a post-baccalaureate Odyssey experience
that further enhance a student’s leadership and professional development
through full-time employment with the College or within the local community.
The Fellowship
Experience:
Graduates are placed with a sponsoring office for two years
to gain valuable work experience, exposure to key campus and community leaders,
quality conversation and the possibility of competitive summer professional
development funds. These Fellowships are
10 month appointments, for two years with quality performance.
- Each
graduate is assigned a quality mentor/supervisor to work closely with
him/her within the office environment.
Regular reflection on professional growth and development is
expected. Performance evaluations
will be conducted throughout your Fellowship.
- Fellowship Dinners: All fellows will meet monthly to
participate in professional development workshops and discuss their professional
plans. Workshop sessions will
include a topic selected by the speaker or the group.
- Summer Professional
Development stipend: Each Fellow is
eligible to compete for funding up to $1000 for summer professional
development opportunities that support his/her future life goals.
- Fellowship Stipend: $23,000/year plus College benefits
In 2011-2012, we
will launch the inaugural class of Hendrix Presidential Fellows in seven
positions across campus. These positions
are sponsored by:
- Career
Services
- Crain-Malin Center of Jewish Culture
- Miller Center for Vocation, Ethics, and
Calling
- The
Murphy Program in Language and Literature
- The
Village at Hendrix
- Wellness
and Athletics – Outdoor Recreation
Application Process for 2011-2013 Positions
Please send a cover letter, resume, and list of three
professional references to the Fellow sponsor listed on the position
description below by April 1. Candidates will be selected for interviews by
April 8. Hiring decisions will be made
by April 11. Prior to an offer being
extended, candidates will be screened for judicial or academic integrity
violations.
Can someone advise me
on creating my cover letter and resume?
Yes! Career Services
will offer a workshop specifically for this Fellowship Program on Monday, March
28, 3:30-5:00pm, SLTC Campbell dining room.
You are also always free to talk with career services staff on Walk-In
Wednesday, March 30.
When will the
position begin?
Most positions will begin August 1, 2011;
however, further details will be provided by the Fellow sponsor.
Will housing be
provided?
No. Fellows are free
to make their own local housing arrangements.
Can the position be
extended to 12 months?
Yes, but the fellowship stipend is a fixed stipend. The assumption is that 12 month fellows may
have more administrative responsibilities throughout the year than a 10 month
programming oriented fellow.
Can a Hendrix
graduate from a year ago or more apply?
Yes, but priority will be given to current seniors.
Can non-Hendrix
alumni apply?
Hendrix alumni will be given priority for these
fellowships. If an outstanding Hendrix
graduate is not available, then non-Hendrix alumni may be considered.
Can a Fellow serve
for only one year?
Only at the discretion of the supervising office. We believe that a quality work experience
requires a two-year commitment to be of most value to the student and the
College sponsor.
Can a Fellow serve
for more than two years?
Our goal is to provide “gap year” opportunities for recent
graduates so extending beyond two years is not possible. Furthermore, departments may vary on the
renewal of their fellowship projects.
