Greene Chapel was built in 1951 as a place for members of the Hendrix Community to gather for worship and prayer. Greene Chapel is the site of weekly campus worship services, and regular celebrations of the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Each December it is the site for the Hendrix College Choir Candlelight Carol Service.

Greene Chapel is a wonderful setting for the celebration of Christian marriage. Persons who choose to be married in Greene Chapel should do so with an intention of planning their wedding and celebrating their marriage in the context that recognizes the sanctity of marriage and invokes the holy blessing of God.

Every aspect of the physical design of the Chapel is intended to enhance the sense of the Holy. The ceiling design and beam layout in Greene Chapel are designed to resemble a sailing ship; the body of the Chapel is called the nave (from navis, the Latin word for ship). The design echoes the ancient view that the Church is a ship carrying the faithful on life’s journey from this world to the next.

Reserving the Chapel

Weddings are held in Greene Chapel throughout the year, provided the event does not conflict with college-related activities in Greene Chapel or Staples Auditorium. In order to give priority to the College’s needs and to student events, reservations for weddings cannot be confirmed until 6 months prior to the wedding date. The Wedding Coordinator can, however, ‘pencil you in’ for a date up to a year in advance. The Facilities Reservation Contract will be sent to you 6 months before the proposed date, if it is still available.

When you reserve Greene Chapel your reservation includes 6 hours the day of the wedding (for decorating, pictures, ceremony, and clean-up), and 1 hour on the preceding evening for the rehearsal, if available.  There will be no more than 2 weddings scheduled for any one Saturday.  Times of your reservation can be:  9:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. or 3:30 P.M. to 9:30 P.M. If you are interested in a Friday or Sunday wedding, please call for information and availability.

A $150 security deposit, which will be refunded after the wedding if the Chapel is left in good condition and no damage occurred during the event, is due 6 months prior to the wedding date. The rental fee is due 60 days prior to the reserved wedding date.
