Jay Barth

Dr. Jay Barth, Program Director

Dr. Jay Barth, M.E. and Ida Graves Peace Distinguished Professor of Politics and Director of Civic Engagement Programs at Hendrix College, is program director of the Hendrix Project Pericles® Advisory Committee. A leading analyst, author and academic authority on the politics of Arkansas and the South, Dr. Barth has published a number of works on politics, including co-authorship of the second edition of Arkansas Politics and Government: Do the People Rule? He currently serves on the board of directors for the National Council on Community and Justice and is a national board representative for the American Civil Liberties Union.

Graduating magna cum laude from Hendrix in 1987 with a bachelor's degree in American Studies, Dr. Barth received a master's degree in 1989 and a doctorate in 1994 in political science from the University of North Carolina. In 2000-01, Barth received the Steiger Congressional Fellowship from the American Political Science Foundation and served on the staff of the late U.S. Sen. Paul Wellstone (MN) working on education and civil rights policy. He is a four-time recipient of a Hendrix senior class's Faculty Appreciation Award that recognizes a faculty member who has shown "excellence in instruction and concern for the welfare of Hendrix students" and was named 2007 Arkansas Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).

The Project Pericles Advisory Committee is responsible for developing programs and collaborations that will deepen the culture of civic engagement at Hendrix and foster participation of the entire college community in civic, community and political affairs.
