STUDENT LIFE QUESTIONS:
Q. What staff members are available within the residence halls to assist my student?
A: Each hall has at least four Resident Assistants who are trained upper-class students available to aid students with most concerns. Further, a professional Area Coordinator or Residence Hall Coordinator that can assist with students’ needs/concerns supervises each residence hall. Students who have personal concerns or questions related to housing should contact any member of the Residence Life Staff at Buhler Hall.
Q. During short holidays are students allowed to stay on campus or must they return home (especially those from out-of-state)?
A: Since there are not any Residential Life Staff members on campus during breaks, the residence halls are closed. Closing procedures are posted in each residence hall well in advance of the designated closing day. Each residence hall reopens at 9:00 am on the day before classes resume for the following term. If you have any further questions concerning housing, please contact the Office of Housing and Residence Life at (501) 450-1325.
Q. How can I reach my student in case of an emergency?
A: While we hope that you will never have to contact your child for an emergency, rest assured that our resources are available to you 24 hours a day if a situation arises. In an emergency situation during normal business hours, contact the Office of Student Affairs at (501) 450-1222 if you are unable to reach your student. You can also contact your student’s Area Coordinator if necessary. If you are faced with a serious emergency after normal business hours, you can contact a member of our Campus Public Safety team who will contact a Student Affairs staff member. Please reserve this procedure for emergencies only. The Hendrix Public Safety number is (501) 450-7711.
Q. What types of computer services are offered in the residence halls?
A: High speed Ethernet connections have been installed in each residence hall room. These connections enable students to connect their personal computers to the college Internet system with the use of an Ethernet card which is installed at the students’ personal expense. This system is referred to as H-NET. In addition to a port for each student, computer labs are available in both Hardin and Veasey Hall. Each lab houses several computer stations as well as a laser printer.
Q. Is there a "student shuttle" or "Hendrix bus" available to carry students who need transportation to the airport?
A: The Division of Student Affairs offers a shuttle to the Little Rock airport for Thanksgiving, Winter Break, and Spring Break. The cost of the shuttle is nominal (approximately $10 each way) and will be billed to the student's account. Reservations are required at least one week before departing so we can make shuttle changes as needed. If the shuttle schedule is not convenient for a student's flight, he or she can ask friends to help or can arrange for taxi service to the airport (approximately $60 each way).

FINANCIAL QUESTIONS:
Q. How do we apply for financial aid?
A: The Office of Financial Aid provides information, applications, and assistance to students who are pursuing a degree at Hendrix and who want to obtain financial aid. Four broad categories of financial aid are available: scholarships, grants, loans, and part-time employment. To obtain applications or further information about requirements for obtaining financial aid, contact the Office of Financial Aid (second floor of Ellis Hall) or call (501) 450-1368. For more information on the scholarships available visit the Hendrix financial aid website.
Q. How many hours of off-campus work (job) do you recommend?
A: We recommend that students work no more than 15 hours per week. Student workers on campus typically work ten hours per week. Anything over 20 hours is considered full-time employment. Academics come first at Hendrix. Although many students on campus have outside employment, the key to their success has been learning to budget their time. A good resource for your son or daughter would be to talk to a current student who also holds a job and see what advice he/she may have to share.
Q. Should I encourage my student to open a local checking account?
A: Many local businesses will accept out-of-town checks for purchases with a driver’s license and a major credit card. However, out-of-state checks may be more difficult to use. On campus, the Business Office Window will cash personal checks or amounts up to $50.00 with a Hendrix ID. If your son or daughter decides to open a local checking account, there are several banks in the Conway area which offer special options for college students. Click here for a list of banks in Conway.
Q. What is the average need for spending money for students per month?
A: The decision as to how much money to send your son or daughter is an individual one that is best made by taking into account your family's unique financial circumstances and your student’s expected living and educational expenses. Spending needs vary from student to student. It is best to sit down with your son or daughter and prepare a budget of expected expenses and resources before he or she comes to Hendrix. There are several questions to take into consideration: Will your student have a car? Will he/she have a job during the school year? Will the long-distance phone bill be his/her responsibility? What type of lifestyle is your student currently used to living? With all this in mind, the average spending need per student is approximately $100 per month.
ACADEMIC QUESTIONS:
Q. Where should a student go for advice on academic questions?
A: Each student is assigned a faculty advisor who is a great resource for academic questions. Your student should feel free to use his/her advisor to the fullest extent necessary. However, there are many other resources that he/she may wish to consult. If students are having trouble in a particular class, they should not hesitate to speak with their professor. All faculty members at Hendrix are extremely approachable. They take a special interest in the academic success of each of their students. Each professor has regularly scheduled office hours during which he/she is readily available to students. Also, the Career Development Center has many resources and aptitude tests that can be used to facilitate the search for a major. R.A.s, other staff members, and peers also frequently provide assistance. Peer tutoring is also available for students that need help with a certain course.
Q. How does Hendrix report grades?
A: Grades are distributed at the end of each term. All grades are mailed to the address specified by the student. Under federal law (the Buckley Amendment), the College provides parents with information on grades of dependent students on request. Transcript requests must be made in writing. For further information visit the Office of the Registrar website Transcript Request page.
