Minutes 9.30.07

Below are the minutes of the first meeting of the Hendrix College Parent Association held on September 30, at 9 a.m., in Hulen Ballroom.

  • The first meeting of the Hendrix College Parent Association was called to order by Jane Johnson and David Marcello, parents of 3rd year student, Ben Marcello.
  • 45 were in attendance for the meeting.
  • Erica Siebrasse, a 3rd year student from Parsons, Kansas, shared her Odyssey experience from the summer. Erica and two others created a program called “Ridin’ Dirty with Science” involving members of the Conway Boys and Girls Clubs. Her group helped students who would not normally be inclined to pursue science see that they could learn and excel in their study of the sciences.
  • President Cloyd greeted the group and thanked them for their initiative to actively assist the College. Following his remarks, he opened the floor for questions. President Cloyd addressed the question of the size of the operating budget by stating that this year’s operating budget is around $35 million.
  • The Parent Association Mission Statement was reviewed and approved unanimously by the group.
  • Ms. Johnson and Mr. Marcello reviewed the ways to actively support the Parent Association and encouraged all in attendance to sign-up for an opportunity.
    • Ways to support the Admission office include:

      • Talking to school counselors about Hendrix.
      • Volunteering to cover a college fair for Hendrix in your home town.
      • Hosting a send-off party or party for parents of prospective students.

      • Sponsor an intern.
      • Take a student to lunch during winter or spring break with the Out To Lunch program.
      • Assist with mock interviews.
    • Ways to support on campus include:
      • Adopt-a-student and send an international student care packages, cards, or take an extra student to lunch when visiting your student.
      • Volunteer to serve hot chocolate during winter finals study break or popsicles during spring finals study break.
      • Assist in planning Family Weekend next year or volunteer at Hendrix events where parents are invited.

    • A discussion on the Hendrix Web Community for parents
    • A request for more updated pictures on the website, specifically, updates to “Picture of the Day” during the summer.
