Cassandra Brown '12Cassandra Brown '12, who graduated this year from Hendrix and is getting ready to start in Hendrix's master's in accounting program, is working as an intern this summer for Arkansas Educational Network Television (AETN) in Conway. The network offers students a variety of opportunities in fields related to public television, from broadcasting to finance.
Q: What are your responsibilities as an intern?
A: As the financial/administrative intern, I am responsible for general office duties, including: personnel/payroll, purchasing and bid solicitation, accounting for payables and receivables, fixed asset inventory and a variety of reporting.
Q: What have you been doing?
A: So far, I have had the chance to learn and perform many tasks, such as entering utility, rent, and purchase order payables for the state, as well as entering Visa credit card payables for the foundation side of the AETN. I have also taken inventory of fixed assets at different microwave and transmitter sites owned by AETN around Arkansas; sat in on group discussions about updating rate cards and costs for the company; researched non-federal financial support criteria; updated fixed asset inventory records; and volunteered at one of AETN's June pledge drives.
Q: Why did you decide to do an internship?
A: I decided to do this internship because I really needed the hands-on experience. Most of all, I choose this internship because they allow me to do and learn a wide variety of accounting, financial, and administrative procedures.
Q: How did you find out about your internship?
A: I found out about my internship at the Career Fair sponsored by Career Services. [The Career Fair is an annual Hendrix event. Employers and graduate programs from around the country have booths at the event.]
Q: How does your internship fit with your possible plans for life after Hendrix, or with your current interests?
A: I plan to work in the finance field as either a financial planner or a budget coordinator.
Q: What's been the greatest part of your internship so far?
A: I love that I get to learn so many different processes and activities such as learning how to use accounting software for both the state and the foundation.
