CONWAY, Ark. (March 17, 2010) − Award winning composer, Dr. Allen Gimbel, will present a lecture on the 20th century Austrian composer, Gustav Mahler, and his music. Gimbel’s presentation titled “Resurrect ME!: Christianity and Judaism in Mahler’s Second Symphony” will occur on Thursday, March 25 at 11:10 a.m. in the Reves Recital Hall on the Hendrix College campus. Admission is free and open to the public.
Assisting Dr. Gimbel in performing excerpts from the symphony will be Dr. Norman Boehm, Professor of Music at Hendrix College on piano and mezzo-soprano, and Dr. Martha Antolik, Professor of Music at the University of Central Arkansas. The event is sponsored by the Crain-Maling Center of Jewish Culture and the Department of Music.
Gimbel was born in 1956 in New York City. He received a bachelor’s degree from Eastman School of Music and his doctorate degree from Juilliard. He has received numerous grants and awards for his work, published articles and reviews in 19th Century Music , and hosted a contemporary music show, “Music Now” on Southern Florida’s National Public Radio affiliate. Gimbel currently writes on contemporary music for American Record Guide.
Dr. Gimbel retired as Associate Professor of Music at Lawrence University’s Conservatory of Music in Appleton, Wis., in 1998. His music is published by Seesaw Music Corp. and Classical Vocal Reprints.
