What is the purpose of this club and who is it for?
Volunteer Action Committee is an organization on Hendrix Campus to provide the Hendrix community members opportunities to give back on a local, national, and international level. VAC hosts at least one day of service a week in the Central Arkansas area; they also have fundraisers for various organizations and causes and host awareness events for the Hendrix and Conway communities.
What are some annual events that the club sponsors?
VAC usually have a few big events for every semester. They provide Parents Night Out events for Hendrix Faculty and Staff, host local bands to help raise awareness for various organizations, and in the spring they host a big organization from outside the Hendrix community to raise awareness and funds for service opportunities on an international level. Last year, VAC hosted Voices from Darfur (an organization bringing refugees from Darfur to help raise awareness about the genocide in the Sudan) and this year they are hosting a group from the organization Invisible Children on the evening of Feb. 26 from 7-11p.m. Invisible Children is an organization raising awareness about the children of Uganda who have lost their innocence because of war, poverty, and disease. These children have been orphaned, abandoned, or kidnapped as child soldiers. VAC will be showing a movie and hosting a panel of Invisible Children speakers to discuss the situation in Uganda. After the panel, a couple local bands will be playing to raise money and awareness for Invisible Children.
What goes on at meetings?
The meetings are an opportunity to discuss upcoming events, t-shirt sales, possible service opportunities, and just general information about the upcoming week in VAC. They are really laid back and everyone on campus is welcome to come hang out. On good nights someone makes food (normally Kady Mac our off-campus representative).
When and where are your meetings located?
Meetings are located in the Lilly office on the second floor of Mills every Sunday at 7:30.
What “behind the scenes” activities does this club participate in?
There is not a lot of “behind the scenes” stuff in VAC because the club is designed for campus-wide participation. They like to keep everything open to everybody on campus to help keep people involved. The representatives of VAC are in charge of t-shirt sales, advertisements for all the events, contacting organizations, and any other sort of preparation.
From the President:
“VAC rules. I know volunteering doesn’t sound like the most exciting thing in the world, but we like to keep our activities fun, entertaining, rewarding, and conducive to everybody’s schedules. Do not feel like joining VAC requires you to participate every week, but if you have nothing to do on a Saturday, please keep VAC in mind. Look for emails, signs, and information in Hendrix Today and Table Talk for weekly information.”
