Pattison is the author of five children’s books, and has written nonfiction for Kids Wall Street News, and fiction for Clubhouse Magazine. Her books include 19 Girls and Me, Searching for Oliver K. Woodman, The Journey of Oliver K. Woodman, The Wayfinder, and The River Dragon.
The River Dragon was included in the New York Public Library’s Best 100 Children’s Books. The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books named The Journey of Oliver K. Woodman a Blue Ribbon Book. The same title was also named a Notable Children’s Book in the Language Arts and was selected by various children’s magazines as Best Book of the Year.
The Bulletin’s review of Searching for Oliver K. Woodman read “A mini-quest complete with adventure, danger and suspense. Youngsters will delight in this whimsy.”
In 1999 Pattison created the Novel Revision Retreat to address the issue of revision. “Writing a strong story is all about revising,” Pattison said. She now teaches the art of revision nationwide. According the Pattison, the goal of the retreat is that every author leaves with strategies and tools for revising their own novel. She adds that the retreat is designed for maximum participation and advance preparation is required.
Pattison received her B.A. from the University of Arkansas and her M.A. from Kansas State University. From 1991 to 1996 she served as Arkansas Regional Advisor for the Society of Children’s Bookwriters and Illustrators. She also worked six years as the Children’s Book Reviewer for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.
Pattison also teaches writing at the University of Central Arkansas. She resides in North Little Rock with her husband and four children.
Pattison’s visit is sponsored by the Hendrix-Murphy Foundation Programs in Literature and Language, which are designed to enhance and enrich the study and teaching of literature and language at Hendrix College.
