Campaign giving tops $87 million

A Commitment to National Leadership: The Hendrix Campaign entered the 2008-09 fiscal year with gifts and pledges of $77.7 million on June 1, 2008. As of Dec. 31, the campaign has reached $87.7 million.

Hendrix alumni and friends responded to a $1.5 million challenge grant from the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation of Tulsa, Okla. Including the challenge grant, the college has received more than $20 million toward the construction of the Student Life and Technology Center (SLTC). Hendrix continues to seek additional funds to support operations in the new 78,000-square-foot facility, which is scheduled to open in January 2010.

"We are excited to pass the $87 million mark and grateful to all the alumni and friends of Hendrix whose generous gifts have made this progress possible," said W. Ellis Arnold III ’79, executive vice president. "The Mabee Challenge has been a tremendous catalyst for the campaign and for the Student Life and Technology Center."

Funding for the Student Life and Technology Center is the final capital project in the College’s $100 million campaign to establish Hendrix as a national leader in engaged liberal arts and sciences education. The campaign will continue through December 2010.

The two-story Student Life and Technology Center will serve as the "living room" of the campus, providing a place where students can relax, interact and utilize state-of-the-art technology in an educational setting. The facility will house a spacious dining room, performance and meeting spaces and offices for religious life, student affairs, academic support services, and student organizations. The Odyssey Program offices will be a hub of activity in the new building, as will the Miller Center for Vocation, Ethics and Calling and the Crain-Maling Jewish Cultural Center, both housed in the Religious Life suite.

The Campaign Cabinet, co-chaired by Madison and Suzanne Nodini Murphy, both ’80, and Dan ’80 and Jennifer Jacuzzi Peregrin ’81, provides leadership for the campaign’s fund-raising efforts and has been a critical part of the College’s success to this point. To date, the campaign has successfully raised money to build a new art complex, a new $23 million Wellness and Athletics Center, to establish 12 Odyssey Professorships, to fund student Odyssey projects, and to support the Annual Fund and numerous other projects.
