Research

My research goal is to use closely related plant species to help understand how inter-specific gene flow has affected their lineages over evolutionary time. Specifically, I am interested in using molecular information to detect cryptic examples of species that arose via diploid hybrid speciation or whose adaptation to novel environments may have been facilitated by inter-specific hybridization.

Student researchers (News and Photos) in my lab are currently focusing on a fascinating and complex group of about 17 species related to ponderosa pine. We are investigating the pines that grow in several  unique areas that may represent undescribed species. In some cases, these are likely recently derived via geographic separation, while in other cases hybridization in a zone of secondary contact may have contributed to speciation. A student project typically includes field work to collect plant material, laboratory work to isolate DNA and amplify selected molecular regions, data analysis, presentation of results at a national conference such as Botany, and co-authorship of a paper submitted to a peer-reviewed journal.

Research in the Willyard lab was documented by Dr. Bill Doria in his Over The Top Science series. You will also find links to several student conference presentations below.
