Mosley, Blaney, and Nash Named to All-Conference Teams

(Womens Soccer) Permanent link

SUWANEE, Ga. (Nov. 17) -- A mishap in the exclusive voting by the league’s head women’s soccer coaches has changed the outcome of this year's All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) balloting.  Hendrix College sophomore goalkeeper Allison Mosley remains on the All-SCAC Second Team and senior defender Abby Blaney will move up from the Third to the Second Team.  Junior midfielder Lydia Nash will still be recognized as an All-SCAC Third Team winner.

While closing out the All-SCAC balloting, SCAC Commissioner Dwayne Hanberry noticed that a couple of coaches had not cast complete ballots for All-SCAC within midfielders, forwards and defenders.  The conference office contacted those coaches and re-opened the system to let them cast their missing votes. Since the releases were already posted on November 16, the conference made the decision to not remove players from the three previous teams, but if any additions were be made, or if a player moved up from Second to First or from Third to Second Teams, those changes would be approved. Once again, the league did not take away honors or move players down, regardless of the outcome.

Mosley (Sulphur, La./St. Louis Catholic H.S.) led the conference with 105 saves and a .897 save percentage. She ranked third in the SCAC with a 0.74 goals against average. Mosley and Blaney (Rogers, Ark./H.S.) led a Warrior defense that tied for third in the league with just 13 goals allowed (0.76 average) and ranked third with a 0.75 goals against average and 10 shutouts. Nash (Fremont, Calif./Washington H.S.) finished tied for seventh in the SCAC with five assists and helped guide a Hendrix offense that was fourth in the league with 88 total points.

Hendrix finished the 2009 season with a 10-7-0 overall record and 4-5-0 SCAC mark. The Warriors collected their highest overall and conference win total since going 10-5-1 overall and 5-3-1 in the SCAC in 2001.

Trinity University reaped the awards of an undefeated regular season as a representative from the conference champion Tigers won or shared every major award selected for the 2009 season.

Trinity’s Brianna Young won a share of the SCAC Offensive Player-of-the-Year award – splitting the vote with co-winner Leslie Robichaux of Millsaps College. Danika Wright of Trinity was voted the SCAC Defensive Player-of-the-Year.

In the same balloting, the Tigers’ Lindsay Euers was tabbed the league’s Newcomer-of-the-Year and her head coach, Lance Key, was voted SCAC Women’s Coach-of-the-Year.

Brianna Young, a senior forward from Rockville Centre, N.Y., led the league in scoring during the regular season with 14 goals and nine assists for 37 points, including a league-high six game-winners. The 14 goals scored by Young represent the most in a single-season by any conference women’s player since the 2006 season. A two-time SCAC Offensive Player-of-the-Week selection this season, Young is the fifth Trinity player in the last seven years to earn at least a share of the league’s Offensive Player-of-the-Year award.

Leslie Robichaux, a senior midfielder from Geismar, La., was right behind Young in SCAC scoring, finishing the season with 13 goals (second in the SCAC) and six assists for 32 points (1.68 points per game – second in the SCAC). She led the league in shots with 87 and was second in game-winners with five. Robichaux’s 13 goals rank second-most in a Millsaps single-season while her 31 career goals are third and 75 career points are fourth in program history – despite playing just three seasons. Robichaux is the first Millsaps player – man or woman – to receive a SCAC postseason Player-of-the-Year soccer honor.

Young and Robichaux were the only nominees to receive votes in the Offensive POTY balloting as both received five votes each.

Danika Wright, a junior defender from Alpine, Utah, captained a very young Trinity defensive unit that conceded only four goals this season – the second-fewest goals any SCAC women’s team has allowed during a regular season. Wright also chipped in offensively with four goals and two assists for 10 points. A two-time all-SCAC selection, Wright was the SCAC Defensive Player-of-the-Week in Weeks 6 and 10.

Wright received eight votes in the Defensive POTY voting. Rachel Brannen of Centre College picked up the remaining two votes.

Lindsay Euers, a first-year midfielder from Austin, Texas, had two goals this season – both in conference play which included the game-winner against Southwestern University. As a result of a pre-season injury to a returning starter, Euers filled in and didn’t relinquish her position. Since 2001, she is the fifth player from Trinity to earn the league’s Newcomer-of-the-Year award. Teammate Abigail Loar won the award last season.

Euers received four votes in the Newcomer-of-the-Year voting, followed closely by Alexandra Ehr of DePauw University, who had three votes. Rachel Brannen of Centre College had two votes and Emily Shaw of Rhodes College received one vote.

Lance Key, in his sixth-year as head coach at Trinity, led the Tigers to their second perfect regular season with a 16-0-0 overall record. Trinity won its 14th SCAC championship - the fourth under coach Key’s leadership - with an 8-0-0 conference mark. Trinity, which is in its fifth NCAA postseason tournament in the past six years, and 15th overall, defeated Maryville (Tenn.) College, 5-0, on Sunday to advance to this weekend’s round of sixteen.

Key received eight votes from his peers in the COTY voting. Jim Evans of Hendrix and Paul Van Hooydonk of Millsaps received one vote each.
