CONWAY, Ark. -- Hendrix College junior forward Michael Bertrand paced the Warriors with 17 points and nine rebounds, while junior guard Cal Rose knocked down four 3-pointers and tallied 16 points in a 79-65 victory over Rust College on Tuesday at Grove Gymnasium.
Hendrix collects its fourth-straight victory and improves to 4-1 on the year in the 2008-09 home opener. The Warriors face their first Southern Collegiate Athletic opponent on Dec. 6 when they travel to Millsaps College for a 1 p.m. contest.
The first half of action remained close as the Bearcats blazed the net on 65 percent shooting. Hendrix managed to stay within reach and eventually grabbed a lead with 3:59 remaining in the opening period. The Warriors led at the break, 37-36.
Hendrix would relinquish their advantage just once in the second half. The Warriors exploded for a 20-8 run that started with 14:51 remaining in regulation to pull away for the win.
Bertrand (Dallas, Texas/Lake Highlands) was 6-of-10 from the field and a perfect 5-of-5 from the charity stripe. Rose (Blytheville, Ark./H.S.) led the team with three steals and pulled down seven boards. Hendrix senior forward Andrew King (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit Preparatory) added 13 points and seven rebounds, while first year guard Ammon Martin (Conway, Ark./H.S.) rounded out the double-digit performers with 10 points on two long balls and four free-throws. Warriors’ junior guard Janson Hightower (Owasso, Okla./H.S.) dished out a game-high six assists and senior forward David Foley (The Colony, Texas/H.S.) blocked a game-best three shots.
