Philosophy

Philosophy Peg Falls CorbittPhilosophy deals with many of the big questions: What is the meaning of life? What is the Good? Why is there something rather than nothing? The department of philosophy at Hendrix is an ideal setting for students motivated to pursue such issues as these. It is also a good setting for students interested in a wide variety of professional pursuits, students whose career ambitions require an undergraduate emphasis in a discipline that teaches critical questioning, clarity of expression, and careful analysis of argument.

The Hendrix philosophy department is intellectually challenging, with an investigative, inquiring atmosphere. It is also open, friendly, and engaging. Students benefit from close contact with professors who are committed teachers and active scholars, animated by their love of the discipline. Studies range from Plato and Aristotle to Descartes, Locke, and Kant, and on to Sartre, Derrida, and Wittgenstein.
