When it comes to deciding your life's work, chances are, you're not just going to want to get a ''job.'' Certainly, jobs can take care of monetary needs, and getting a job just for the financial security is certainly something that you will probably want to do at least at certain times of your life. For example, you may work a variety of jobs while you're in school both to pay for school and to get job experience for later on in your career.

When it comes to actually deciding on your career itself, though, you're going to want to choose something that you're both talented at and love to do. So, for example, if you love to work with numbers, and if you like helping people figure out what to do with their money, how to invest it, and so on, you may want to embark on a career as a financial advisor. Or, for example, you may want to become a certified public accountant.

So, I decided to put these tools to the test.

My first step was to update my resume and my personal web site. These would serve as the foundation for all information about me. But, much more essential to networking, I needed to update my LinkedIn profile with relevant information and recommendations from former colleagues, and join the Sodexo Careers – Past, Present & Future networking group. Having done some quick searches, I found that key Sodexo people had profiles on LinkedIn – and I wanted them to be able to find my profile, too.

To read more of Trish's story, click here!

For the summer I am interning at a financial services firm. I love it. However, I think an intern in my group is trying to sabotage me. This girl is not a very good intern. Recently, one of the analysts asked me if I would double check her work because she has made a number of mistakes. The other intern was not pleased. I think she believes that I requested to review her work and she resents me for it.

Now, I believe she is trying to sabotage my work to make me look bad. On at least three occasions work that I saved to the shared drive was altered and silly errors were inserted. I don't have proof it was her, but I'm 100% sure that the documents were altered because the last two times I kept hard copies of my work before I left for the evening. When I returned in the morning the documents had been changed. How should I handle this? Do I tell my manager or confront her directly?

It would be terrific if every degree came with a job we loved, but then we wouldn’t be living in the real world. In the real world, a great job is a prized possession, and what’s more, it’s something that the average college graduate has to work hard to get. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, nearly 1.5 million bachelor’s degrees are conferred every year in the United States. Roughly all college graduates look for some type of employment upon graduation, which means you have some pretty tough competition.

You should take calculated steps to jumpstart your career. Once you’ve decided on the career you want, your goal should be to seek out those companies or organizations that offer jobs relative to your career aspirations.

Entering the “real world” in the middle of a recession is most likely going to present many challenges for college graduates. With the job market looking the way it does these days, graduates may be re-evaluating the decision to pursue a career instead of applying to graduate school. According to 11alive.com in Atlanta, Ga., there are jobs available for those grads that stick with their decision to enter the job market and are willing to be patient and persistent. One key factor in obtaining these available positions is flexibility.

But then came the unexpected: three offers.

After sharply scaling back during the recession, many companies are again expanding internship programs. Both employers and university career centers are seeing stronger demand for interns this year. And a survey released last month by the National Association of Colleges and Employers shows intern hiring is expected to edge up 3 percent this year after plunging more than 20 percent last year.

FORTUNE -- Dear Annie: I had a strange experience the other day: I went to a second round of job interviews at a company where I'd really like to work, and a manager there mentioned that he, too, is a fan of a little-known science fiction writer whose books I happen to like.

That was nice, since it gave us something in common besides work, and we had a pleasant conversation. But it dawned on me later that the only way he could possibly have known I liked this writer was, if he had seen my "wish list" on Amazon.com. Is that something employers usually look at? It seems weird. And if they're looking at that, what else are they looking at? - Creeped Out

1. Lying on your resume. On my resume I have "slightly" exaggerated the work I did at my last job. Well...maybe a little more than "slightly". I participated in all of the activities that I outlined, but generally played a smaller role than the reader might assume. That being said, I do know a lot about these things. If I am asked about these things in an interview, it will definitely sound like I know what I'm talking about as long as I keep my answers relatively short. Is that a problem? I mean everyone embellishes a little, right? Click here to read what this person wrote on his resume compared to what he actually did in the office.

If you are interviewing for a highly competitive position or looking for a job in a down market, you can’t afford to make these common mistakes.

1. Insufficient knowledge of key job details. At a high level, most people understand the key skills relevant for their target job (e.g. teamwork, communication, problem solving), but do you also know the types of analysis performed in the job, and the deliverables that are handed off to managers or clients? Do you know what other departments or constituencies you would interact with and why? It will be very obvious to the interviewer if you don’t understand the job well enough. Well before your interview, make sure to talk to someone with direct experience in that job. Make sure you can answer these questions about the job before your interview.

For more mistakes that bright people make CLICK HERE!

You're looking at photos from the weekend when you see that your girlfriend was tagged in an album of someone who is not your 'friend.'

You click through to that person's profile to get the scoop on how they know each other. Then you see some mutual friends, click around a few more times and before you know it, you're looking at wedding photos of people you don't even know.

If you have a social networking profile, the above scenario probably seems all too familiar. (Trust me; there's a reason I was able to go through the steps of it so well...)

While many job seekers heed advice on joining social media sites to use as networking tools, they are also warned not to invest too much time -- especially at work -- in these all-consuming, often-addictive online vehicles.

CollegeGrad.com, the #1 Entry-Level Job Site, has announced the Top Intern Employers and intern hiring numbers for 2009. Although this year's total hiring has shown a decrease from 2008 (49,000 in 2009 vs. over 50,000 in 2008), the need for intern candidates is still strong and growing stronger throughout the year.

Foster City, CA (PRWEB) July 8, 2009--CollegeGrad.com, the #1 Entry Level and Intern Job Site, today announced that the 2009 Top Entry Level Employers survey indicates that Top Intern Employers will hire a little over 49,000 interns in 2009, a 2 percent decrease from the 50,000 intern hires in 2008. Keeping in mind the 2007-2008 increase of only 0.52 percent, this spells continued tough competition for internship opportunities.

With that in mind, look over these 25 ways you might be unknowingly sabotaging your job search:

College students and young professionals aren’t the first to make stupid mistakes, but they are the first to post these mistakes online for all the world to see.
Gone are the golden days when you provided potential employers with carefully screened references guaranteed to give a glowing recommendation of your skills and character. Why call those people when you can look at all the things a candidate has posted online or easily figure out who else they’ve worked with and call the unscreened references?

Be forewarned that these days, most employers do some amount of due diligence on the people they hire and those they want to hire. At a minimum, they will do a Google search on you. Many will also attempt to check out your profiles on sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn and MySpace...

How do I build a great resume?**

oWe want you to succeed. That's why we're providing tips and tricks about how to write a killer resume, ace the interview and join our team.

Good resumes are clear, concise and full of valuable details. Here are some tips for writing a memorable resume:

Specifics

We want to read about specific accomplishments opposed to vague facts.

Mediocre: "Improved sales."
Improved: "Increased sales 50 percent by implementing a new sales plan."

Mediocre: "Managed other employees."
Improved: "Managed five employees who collectively met each quarter's sales goals."

Quantify your accomplishments: What was the result? How much? How long? Answer those questions to best explain your relevant experience.

Mechanics

Perfect spelling and grammar are essential. Anything less is simply unprofessional. Use spell check and beyond that, have someone who is strong in English spelling and grammar proofread it. A mistake could be the difference between getting an interview and getting your resume tossed.

Focus

Be sure your objective statement is focused. Don't tell us about your life's goal. Instead, write about your specific job goals and how they relate to the position. Then compose your education and work experience information to clearly support your objective. Unless they specifically relate to the position, omit personal information such as age, photos and hobbies.

Presentation

For all formats, consistently use one clean typeface such as Arial or Times New Roman ranging in size from 10 pts. to 14 pts. For a hard copy, use a high-quality paper and save the colored paper for arts and crafts; you might see using it as a way to stand out, but a potential employer might see it as goofy. Keep it simple.

Honesty

Never lie or exaggerate on a resume and include all employment information; a good rule of thumb is for the past 15 years. A background check will show all of this information, so you might as well include it in your resume now. Also, steer clear of negative comments. Not everything on your resume will thrill you, but don't complain, be careful with criticism and stay positive.

So not only do you have to make a great first impression, you have to do it fast. Here's how to create a compelling, concise resume that makes an immediate positive impression...

If television sitcoms of the 1980s and 1990s are to be believed, every parent in America argued with a teenager who wanted to wear ripped jeans and ill-fitting shirts to school.

These shows also implied that the youth of America ran around speaking like Valley Girls and using slang no one over the age of 17 understood.

I thought these fashion battles were dramatized TV nonsense and never happened in real households.

I was wrong.

Judging by the amount of inappropriate attire job seekers wear to interviews and employees wear to work, many adults are taking advantage of the freedom to wear whatever they choose. And some of them seem to be wearing the exact clothes their parents disapproved of over a decade (or two) ago........

He cites sustained improvement in science education in terms of both quality and numbers. He also notes that the available jobs for recent graduates in science fields are actually fewer than those seeking positions. He points out that heeding calls for increases in numbers graduating with science or engineering backgrounds could result in many of those graduates taking positions in non-science related fields due to a shortage of jobs for them. His arguments make the case for improved science education initiatives that are also accompanied by job creation in these fields. Wadhwa’s closing arguments are supportive of a strong liberal arts background and continued investment into businesses which promote sustainability and provide innovative technical opportunities for college grads.

“We need our children to receive a balanced and broad education.
Do not use a template for your final draft. Your resume will not have a unique look or feel. It also may be difficult to add content and shift the format or headings.

Use minimal margins for your page layout. 1/2 or 3/4 inch margins all around usually look great.

Watch for spelling errors (advice we could use for this blog at times as well)

Make sure that your profile, objective, or experience descriptions are unique and specific. Prove your experience and qualifications. Do not waste space with content that would work for any other cadidate applying for the same position or describe anyone who worked in a similar position.

Always include your cover letter and reference if you are applying directly for a specific position. However, use care when including these in posting your resume to a general job board.

Don't think of your resume as a static/single document. Adapt it as needed or create multiple resumes. e.g. one for positions related to your major and one for positions related to your experience.

Again, drop us an email at careerservices@hendrix.edu for a personal resume review.

Discussions of the latest generation of young working adults and students, loosely defined as those born in the 80's and 90's, have been at the top of career-related topic lists for some time now. One could probably devote an entire blog to only this issue. I am sure that there are some already out there. The majority of arguments in the debates seem to be overwhelmingly negative in their view of the career management styles of the latest generation. However, this article by Jack and Suzy Welch presents some excellent points for the conversation on the alternate side. Optimism, social responsibility, and entrepreneurial spirit are the keywords used to describe young workers. A few positives in this debate can't hurt and are much needed to balance the perceptions of hiring managers.

The Labor Day weekend is always a prime time for career and employment news items. Particularly interesting are reports regarding the University of Chicago’s most recent studies related to job satisfaction. Here are a few highlights and career services observations:

Workers in South Central states (including Arkansas) were most satisfied with their jobs. (Factor geography into your career planning)

People working in helping or creative professions expressed high job satisfaction ratings. (Consider working with a non-profit or pursuing your artistic ambitions)

Job satisfaction increases with age.
(Your first job may not be perfect, that’s ok, your career path is a progressive journey)

Job satisfaction increases with education-those with graduate degrees reported the highest ratings. (Strongly consider graduate school-the rewards go beyond earnings potential)

-Teach for America has posted their call for 2008 corps members. This is an excellent service opportunity. They seek students from all majors: check out their listing on Jobline if you would like to learn more.
-We also recently received a note concerning an excellent opportunity with DuoShare. The open position is Software Development Engineer. Email us as soon as possible if you would like more info.

The great opportunities for this weeek do not end there.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to attend the 2007 Fayetteville Shale Symposium. If you are not familiar with the Fayetteville Shale play, Arkansas Business, the symposium organizer has all of the details you need – they will also have the symposium presentation outlines posted online soon. The shale play provides a tremendous opportunity for new job creation. For example, Southwestern Energy, just one of the companies involved in the Fayetteville Shale play currently has thirty job postings in Conway alone. These jobs include some advanced technical and administrative roles. Several accounting positions are also posted with Southwestern.

Some additional reflections on the symposium:
-The extraction of natural gas from the Fayetteville shale offers great economic opportunity to the area and the state through economic investment, community patronage, and the potential for new, high-paying jobs.
-There are also important environmental concerns and the state environmental agency (ADEQ) is working to make sure there is minimal environmental impact.
- From the company, investment, and legal speakers, I gathered that the enthusiasm for these opportunities should be tempered with realistic expectations: There will be declining values from drilling operations, the operations basically only offset traditional vertical drilling of the past, and energy prices will determine whether continued and expanded operations are economically feasible.

Welcome to the Hendrix Job Blog! Hopefully this first post will get the introductions and details out of the way and we can move on to the important stuff! This is the place to find breaking job and internship postings, career and industry news, and advice for your job or internship search. Our primary audience is the Hendrix community, but we welcome all readers and hope that we provide some insight into college career services for employers, bloggers, and all readers.

Hendrix Career Services already utilizes a great job posting board, Jobline, and we connect with students and employers in several ways. So why the blog? This gives a chance to quickly deliver content to our constituents (students, parents, employers, career professionals) – especially if you make use of an RSS reader. We encourage dialogue, so comments and links are welcome. Also, make sure you check out our links of interest. We’ve included a few folks in this list with much more blogging experience than we can boast. They also provide some top-notch career advice and information.
