I wanted to send a reminder to everyone that the type of email below is an attempt to get you to open an attachment that will try to infect your computer. You should never open an email attachment unless it is from someone you know or it is something you expect.

Also remember you should never respond to an email requesting passwords or other private information.

The latest information on the Trojan type of email is located at http://news.softpedia.com/news/Bredolab-Trojan-Being-Spread-Through-Fake-Emails-120388.shtml

More information on phishing is available at http://apwg.org/consumer_recs.html.

Your work computer should be protected with the antivirus software that is installed and automatically updated, but remember, if in doubt delete the email and do not open the attachment.

Students should ensure their virus protection and antispyware software is up to date.

Don't fall for Phishing Attempts

Many email users at Hendrix recently received an email similar to the one below indicating that there are changes to the web based email system. Hendrix is not making changes to our web mail system. This is a type of spam called “phishing” because the sender is fishing for your password. This example makes a few common errors including poor grammar, a request to confirm information although none is provided, and an indication that the word Hendrix is trademarked.

Please do not respond to email of this sort in any way. The Hendrix IT department would never request your id and password through a mass email and any changes to the email system would be communicated to the Hendrix Community in a public and verifiable manner.

If you are in doubt about the veracity of an email that appears to come from the Hendrix IT department you can contact ithelp@hendrix.edu or call x1340 for more information.

There are a number or phishing emails, such as for Banks, Ebay, IRS, etc, that asks you to provide your personal information. You should never respond to this type of email. (more information at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phishing )
